Well, one of my S lenses (120 Macro) just started to exhibit a focus-related problem. The motor turns--or at least makes noise like it is turning--but the lens does not move. I would guess it is a focus ring issue rather than the motor itself, but I don't know if Leica would just repair that or do a whole motor upgrade as it has the old one. If they are indeed still doing the upgrade. I'm guessing it will be at least $500 or so. Does anyone know if the local Leica store here in the U.S. takes the lens for repair, do they charge shipping and handling charges to send it to Germany on top of the repair cost?

Not really. I paid a bit over $100 in labor for the Schneider AF lens repair, a bit more for parts but the motor wasn't replaced. In the case of my Leica lens, the motor is making all the usual noises but the lens doesn't focus, so I don't think the motor is at fault. But I'm going to guess that Leica just does a motor replacement no matter what. I know I really won't know anything until I send it in.

If the lens still focuses with the manual ring, then the mechanical linkage is still good.  That ponts to the motor.  Also, if it is the original older motor, this was more common than the newer replaced motor…. Just thoughts…

You’ve apparently been asking about this lens for 18 months. I would have recommended sending it in then as others did. But now I think you have your answer (and can contact a dealer or Leica for service information).

That's the well-known focus gear issue. Leica will fix this for a flat fee, which includes a full CLA/service.

We don't know what Leica does, exactly. Do they replace the gear, or just the motor, or some other things? It really doesn't matter. The fee is quite reasonable (less than I would pay locally for qualified service on any lens), and they guarantee their work.

FYI, keep the receipt. It increases the resale value of your lens by a significant amount.

I asked about the lens, but I wasn't having any issues with it until this week. The only symptom cited was complete motor failure, not the motor just spinning--that was unexpected. I am not complaining, just trying to understand more about what might be happening and the extent of the service needed.

I know, but like others, would have recommended preemptive replacement. Price was also very reasonable. (Personally, I would have only bought from a dealer like Leica Miami and gotten an updated lens and warranty to start… but that’s a different discussion.)

Regardless, it’s easy enough now to contact a dealer and/or Leica to have it serviced and get a quote.
