Smudgerer Posted June 3, 2023 Share #1 Â Posted June 3, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have been using Lightroom for years and now I'm using LR Classic, however I guess I have just developed my own ways of stumbling through the application rather than perhaps approach the work in a better more structured way so I am looking for a good manual / guide-book to help with that task and would appreciate any suggestions / recommendations for a useful publication in English...........I do not do any complicated work just clean up, crop, resize maybe, attend to levels etc etc, then print. IÂ know my workflow needs a better approach, I just need to know how to get there. I work on Mac with a relatively current OSX. Thanks in advance. S. wda Posted June 3, 2023 Share #3  Posted June 3, 2023 (edited) I am a great believer in Adobe videos by Julienne Kost. I have used many and worked with two monitors to allow pausing and applying help to my own work. Excellent. But my enduring manual recommendation is  Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic - The Missing FAQ, by Victoria Bampton. Jeff S Posted June 3, 2023 Share #5  Posted June 3, 2023 Yes. Julieanne’s free videos or Victoria’s written resources.  Or, for a reference guide, one of the Kelby books (ignore the bad jokes).. also offers good tips on catalog structure and organization, to avoid chaos. Anbaric Posted June 5, 2023 Share #6 Â Posted June 5, 2023 (edited) I can't vouch for the current Lightroom Classic CC book linked below, but I always found Martin Evening's treatment of earlier Adobe software excellent, perhaps because he was writing very much from the point of view of a working photographer rather than just a software guru: https://www.adobepress.com/store/adobe-photoshop-lightroom-classic-cc-book-9780135447390 Sadly, when looking this up I learned that he died last year: https://amateurphotographer.com/latest/photo-news/martin-evening-remembering-a-fine-contributor/ https://www.aopawards.com/commemorating-martin-evening/ https://lightroomkillertips.com/the-lightroom-community-has-lost-a-legend-martin-evening-1959-2022/ Â Edited June 5, 2023 by Anbaric

Jeff S Posted June 5, 2023 Share #8 Â Posted June 5, 2023 I also missed this sad news, and include his writings as instrumental in guiding my early Lightroom use. Â Different presentation style than Kelby and others; and another good resource. Jeff
rwbowman Posted June 5, 2023 Share #9 Â Posted June 5, 2023 (edited) His books have been my go-to references for years, and continue to be so. A wonderful writer and educator. Rest in Peace, Martin Evening. Edited June 5, 2023 by rwbowman
wda Posted June 5, 2023 Share #10 Â Posted June 5, 2023 (edited) A rare and generous talent. Such unexpected and extremely sad news. RIP Dear Martin E. Edited June 5, 2023 by wda
Smudgerer Posted June 7, 2023 Author Share #11 Â Posted June 7, 2023 Thanks for the suggestions. I will see if I can find a copy of Martin Evening's Lightroom Classic CC book.......Or one of Kelby's books as per JeffS's suggestion. It has to be a book, not a video or blog or anything online, I don't need yet another screen to look at and endlessly scroll through. Not enough life or patience left for that anymore.

The advantage of the 'Lightroom Queen' book is that if you register it you get an update on every software upgrade.

Early on, I supplemented books from Evening, Kelby, Brampton, et.al, with Julieanne Kost’s free videos, which typically are concise, control-specific and user friendly. They often quickly demonstrate and bring to life controls and features, typically with a host of good tips. You might browse a few just to see if you bond with her content and presentation style.  Jeff

So of course I had to go get it colour printed out and spined (?) at a local business centre, €80,00! But still for me so much better now than having to look up my questions on the web'.............Cheers and thanks to everyone for the recommendations! Consider ImagePrint (Black) if you’re looking for software that exceeds LR functionality and capabilities.  I use it a an external LR editor. Lots of discussion available in the DPP forum section on this and related topics. Jeff

Jeff Me too regarding prints, it closes the circle on taking an image that works for you, anything else, web / social media / whatever is utterly unsatisfactory for me. Others of course differ. Yes I have tried / owned IP before and know it's advantages, but haven't renewed "membership" for some years now. I print 85%+ in B&W and find for my final prints Piezography Pro/ QuadTone RIP cannot be beat for the flexible B&W tones of output I like. Maybe it is time to try IP again though, I will do a trial........It's pretty costly though for a 61cm/24" printer licence so there is that.......... Thanks!
Jeff S Posted June 7, 2023 Share #19  Posted June 7, 2023 I like the flexibility IP provides with complete range of papers and custom profiles (they’ll make any if already not available).  Much more variety than Piezo IMO, along with all the benefits of a RIP, plus full time soft proofing.  I wouldn’t be without it, despite the cost, but I prefer smallish prints (95 % b&w) with my 17 inch printer.   Jeff

Adding insult to injury I'd also have to add 20% VAT on that when the order hits the EU. Maybe the Red plan would work, but I'm going to give both a trial soon anyway. My printing is like yours, pretty much all B&W and really only two papers both of which I have good profiles for from the UK paper supplier. Interestingly though IP still had record of my previous purchase of more than 15 years ago...........Apparently back then I did have the equivalent of the Black plan. Cheers !
