It appears the Q3 only outputs 4K on the hdmi port.  It says it can output 8k if you do not write to the sd card.  How do you do that?  I suppose you can remove it.  Haven't tried but in any event you will only get live video that way and would have to record it on something like the Ninja.  I have a Samsung 2023 75 inch 8k tv but alas no way to get 8k material into it.  The tv will only accept 4k through the usb ports so one must input through hdmi.  I did not know this limitation of the Q3 when I bought it.  Any ideas?  Perhaps I have misread the specs.

Removing the SD does not work nor does turning off the tab on the sd card.  I thought perhaps the ninja V+ would work but I downloaded the owners manual and it states the output from the hdmi out port is up to 4k only.  What good is it to record 8k to the ninja if it is only on the ssd drive?  I have the full 8k file on the Q3 sd card.  There seems to be no way to show 8k and I don't understand how many youtube videos show 8k output from the Q3.  I think many are fooled and it is only 4K.  Would appreciate some suggestions.[

I just took my new Q3 home and can't figure out why the 8K video option is grayed out. At first I thought it was my Sony 300mb/s card. I read of some people having issues with the Sony cards. But then I tried my very fast Sandisk card and the same problem. The owners manual says nothing about this. Is there some other setting in conflict that I'm missing?

What is it you’re trying to accomplish? Are you trying to record an 8k video on the Q3, then be able to playback that 8k file on your TV, by connecting it via hdmi?

I know you said you don’t want live view, nor the use of a ninja, but I’m not sure of the specific use case you’re referring to.

ultimately, 8k requires a lot of variables to be accounted for  you must have a cable that can handle 8k and is compatible with both devices, both devices must accept the specific codec, file type, bit rate and color depth. The ninja V+ won’t record true 8k from the Q3 (Sony 8k doesn’t record on the ninja either).

What I’ve done is just pressed record on my Ninja V+ with an 8k cable from the Q3 and it records at 4k but it will seems to be an over sampled 8k to 4k image. I could be wrong but this is just a method I’ve tested and seems to provide that result.

8k needs a v90 UHS II card, it’s not the read speed but it’s the write speed that is needed. It sounds like that is what you have, but would need more specifics about the other settings to determine why it was greyed out. You can always use the FOTOS app to send the logs to Leica tech support and get their input on why it wasn’t available.
