I was shooting a football game today and had to use 800iso because it was dark overcast. I was surprised at how much better 800iso is than it used to be. It is probably just a bit worse than the old 400iso, but much better than the old 800iso. Here are a couple images I shot. Not only is the noise better, but I think the colour is more vibrant than the old 800iso setting.

Robert,

I haven't updated my DMR yet... still on v1.1. Do you see a large improvement in ISO 400? Currenlty I'm allegergic to anything over 200 ISO on the DMR. That's what the M8 is for. :)

But, I'd love to have a little extra speed sometimes.

Thanks,

David

Robert - I totally agree with your assessment. Mind you, I rarely shoot below 400 ISO anyway, most of my work being done at that setting. 800 ISO is now a viable alternative especially since it is close to the old 400 I used most of the time with firmware version1.1.

Cheers,

I don't think you can expect that big of an improvement in the M8. The M8 is still better at higher ISO levels than the DMR.

Well, the base ISO on the M8 is 160 instead of ISO 100. I think the M8's base ISO is 200 in reallity and, therefore, the M8 has one full stop advantage. The DMR has three "jumps" from base ISO to ISO 800 (100 -> 200 -> 400 -> 800). The M8 has only two "jumps" (160/200 -> 320/400 -> 640/800). This is the key difference.

Nice photo's Robert, which lens did you use? I note the shuuter speed at 1/750th.

I have also used the 800 ISO on occasion (I have also used 800 un-intentionally when forgetting to switch back to my preferred 200!) and was also pleasantly surprised at the image quality and low noise.

Having just returned from a six week trip across Australia, the R9/DMR has stood up to a lot of use and battering.........12 flights, an overnight train across the desert, a ferry ride and two sailing catamarran trips! It looks a bit more used than it did before I left home, but continued working faultlessly. The three lenses that I took were all changed frequently and so far I can see no signs of sensor dust which was my biggest concern, although I did take a sensor cleaning kit, it wasn't used.

The biggest hazard seemed to be the DEET in my tropical insect repellant..........the white paint on the buttons of the DMR doesn't like it!!

Another photographer that I met on the way had most of the black paint on his Cannon DSLR completely stripped by his fly spray!

I was using the 400mm f2.8 APO telyt. It is the same lens I am shooting in my avatar.

The shot from earlier in the day was at 1/1000th, the one a bit later was at 1/750th.

I lost some of the white paint on the left row of buttons from some sunscreen on my nose getting on them. As for bug spray, It eats anything plastic and some paint.
