It was quite foggy this morning when I went to the beach.  I was interested to see how my new 1/4 black diffusion filter would do.

Photo 1:  Exactly at the start of golden hour.  1/60, f2.5, ISO320, EV=0; cropped & changed to B&W with Lightroom (although there was not much to do.)

Photo 2:  Shooting directly into the sun, 1/1000, f8, ISO100, EV=-2.3.  A few parameters slightly tampered with in LR but the colors are untouched -- that's what I remember seeing.

... and I promise I won't upload any more beach photos.  🙃

I like both pics, especially the second, but there is banding in the sky with each of them.  Can that be removed?

Hmmm.  Not sure what you mean by "banding" and I am looking for something similar that appears in both.  (They were taken under wildly different light conditions.)  Now, I do see some goofiness in the sky in the 2nd one.  I had not seen it before but I do now.  I suppose that's expected when shooting directly into the sun (... my poor sensor ...)  Perhaps you  can elaborate?  I'd like to look at this further -- I may be missing something!

This type of banding tends to be caused by lower quality files. Lower bit depth, less tonal range. Are you editing jpegs by any chance?

Good observation, but no, I used the monster raw files.  Hmmm.  I'm wondering if the filter may be the culprit.  I'm going to need to test some, I think.

Another common reason is aggressive colour channel editing 👍
