Steve B Posted May 10, 2023 Share #1 Posted May 10, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) I learned something this week about my current inability to update firmware on my Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-70mm f/2.8 ASPH when you only have a Lumix L-mount camera body. I just purchased the new Lumix S5II camera (a great improvement over the first S5 version), which came bundled with the Lumix 20-60mm S lens. I also purchased a Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-70mm f/2.8 ASPH lens. Fortunately, the Leica lens has the latest version 2.0 firmware. After talking this week with Leica USA tech support, I learned that the only way to update any future Leica SL lens firmware is to do it through a connected SL or SL2 body (which I no longer have). Considering the "partnership" between Leica, Panasonic/Lumix and Sigma, this seems to be a compatibility shortcoming. Are thee any other work-around solutions? NickT Posted May 14, 2023 Share #2 Posted May 14, 2023 Ask to borrow a friend's SL/2, or tkae the lens to a Leica store and "borrow" one of their cameras for a few minutes.
Simone_DF Posted May 18, 2023 Share #3 Posted May 18, 2023 This is a really stupid decision for the L mount

Add the inability to use IBIS, & Linear focus between brands too. Edited May 22, 2023 by Planetwide
Babylonia Posted May 29, 2023 Share #5 Posted May 29, 2023 The other way round, using Sigma lenses to Panasonic or Leica L-mount camera. They are better prepared for these differences. Sigma do have a USB SB DOCK UD-11 for updating firmware, and changing the appearance of manual focussing. Compatibility lens list (PDF) in using this USB dock UD-
insomnia Posted May 29, 2023 Share #6 Posted May 29, 2023 How does acquiring another lens help him? But yes, a Sigma lens can be updated from a Leica Body.
Archiver Posted May 30, 2023 Share #7 Posted May 30, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) For an alliance between brands that hypothetically maximizes sales through cross compatibility, they really need to make better decisions regarding that compatibility. I have a S5 and am planning to go further into the L mount system, but having to be wary about lens choices doesn't help.
Planetwide Posted May 30, 2023 Share #8 Posted May 30, 2023 They should make a universal L mount dock that works with each manufacturer's software. Easy solution...

So they can charge more money? The solution was there already, make sure lens firmware can be installed via any L mount camera, why take it away? jaapv Posted June 9, 2023 Share #10 Posted June 9, 2023 They have taken nothing away, this problem was around from the very beginning.
