CLTRYD Posted May 10, 2023 Share #1 Â Posted May 10, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hey! first time posting (I couldn't find an answer on older threads, but I might have missed something, let me know :) ) I use both an elmarit 28mm asph (version 2) and a 50mm summarit 1.4. Both lenses have the modern-type screw-in lens hoods, and I want to buy clear filters from B+W (https://bw-filtershop.de/products/basic-007-clear-filter-mrc) for extra protection. Does anyone knows if the B+W clear basic MRC filters fit with the lens hoods ? I wonder if the thickness of the metal grip that I can see on the image (link above) would block the screw-in lens hoods. Thank you for your feedbacks! Advertisement Posted May 10, 2023 Posted May 10, 2023 Hi CLTRYD, Take a look here B+W clear filter compatible with screw-in lens hood ?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Gregm61 Posted May 10, 2023 Share #2  Posted May 10, 2023 (edited) I own two different B+W two stop ND 46mm filters. One fits inside the 35mm f1.4 FLE version 1 screw in hood with no issue. The other gets stuck in the hood and screws off with it, so it probably depends on the version of the filter you buy. Maybe they just carry one type of the standard filter. I have no idea. I only use special use filters like ND on the color body and yellow/orange, etc on the Monochrome. I don’t have my ND filters here to snap and image or tell you which is which at this hour of the day but could later when I am home. Your feedback is already helpful ; if you ever get the time to share the images of which one works and which one doesn't, I will be very much interested! Gregm61 Posted May 11, 2023 Share #4 Â Posted May 11, 2023 (edited) The filter that does not bind with the hood on my 35/1.4 FLE is the B+W 103 ND 0.9- 3BL 8x MRC The one that binds has "MRC nano MASTER" on the ring. They look virtually the same in size/design. The difference between the two....the outside wall of the filter that does not fit well inside the hood is reeded, like a half dollar coin. The one over which the hood fits perfectly, the outside of the filter is smooth. Â Edited May 11, 2023 by Gregm61
rustyrus Posted May 11, 2023 Share #5  Posted May 11, 2023 What Greg said…  The new Filters from BW don’t work with the screw in filters. I would buy Leica if you don’t want to search for things. Those work with no problems.
logan2z Posted May 13, 2023 Share #6  Posted May 13, 2023 (edited) I use B+W filters with my 28mm Elmarit 2.8 and Summarit 2.4s with screw-in lens hoods and haven't experienced any problems. The filters I use are : B+W 39mm UV Haze MRC 010M Filter B+W 39mm Yellow MRC 022M Filter I do know that these particular filter models have been replaced by newer models (which no longer include the plastic protective cases 🙄) so perhaps they've changed the design and they no longer work with Leica's screw-in lens hoods. If true, that would be a shame. Anbaric Posted May 13, 2023 Share #7  Posted May 13, 2023 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) I can't say I'm a fan of the new branding or design of the B+W filters. Why all that knurling, especially as it looks like it's causing problems? I've never found them hard to grip before. The replacement for XS-Pro is 'Master', which sounds a bit odd, and the successor to F-Pro is 'Basic', which sounds a bit cheap. https://schneiderkreuznach.com/en/company/news/press-releases/b-w-filter-basic-and-master I assume the MRC filters that worked with the hoods mentioned above are from the old F-Pro range (the narrow ring XS-Pro range, and now Master, are labelled 'MRC Nano' rather than just 'MRC' to indicate the improved dirt and water repellent layer they reserve for the more expensive filters). I've chosen F-Pro myself for some other lenses with sliding built-in hoods because they were flush with the lens barrel when fitted and wouldn't interfere with the hood. You may still be able to find F-Pro filters in the supply chain. Make sure they are labelled 'MRC', as B+W also sold uncoated or single coated filters in the F-Pro mount. Otherwise something like Hoya HD might be worth a try. The F-Pro filter mount looks like this: Welcome, dear visitor! Their mounts are narrower than F-Pro from front to back, but I'm not sure about their thickness between the inside and the outside of the ring, which is what's important here. Yes, the filters I listed above are F-Pro. When I saw the price of the new filters (2x what I paid for the previous gen) and noticed that they no longer came with protective cases, I picked up a handful of NOS filters while I could still find them.
