Hi All So yesterday I received my leica 🤗and I’m lost for words, It looks fantastic 🤗Have to ask thou is it necessary to tape over the small holes like I have seen on some Leica q, And nr 2 is best way to use it, I have no idea been fooling around with Fujifilm and a few more but not Leica so it would be nice to get some guidance thank you all

Stay safe 🤗

I suggest you read a general book on digital cameras and photography (or watch video equivalents), then read the manual fully. To start with, set the aperture, focus and shutter speed settings to A (auto) and go out and take pictures. If you are unhappy with the results, come back here and post them for advice. That is a starting point; once you understand how the camera works and what it can do, you can play with changing the controls.

There is no best way to use the Q. There is only your way.🙂

I have a Q2, not a Q, and I'm not sure what small holes you refer to. But if Leica thought it was necessary to tape them up then they wouldn't be there in the first place! Taping them up will not make the Q weatherproof.

I believe the reason for tape is the potential for dust on the sensor and the holes are the microphone or speaker.

I don't use video and did put some tape on the camera.   I don't have any sensor dust issues and carry the camera hiking where there's lots of dust.   Whether the tape helps or not is questionable.

The silver Q is beautiful and unique, Leica never made it for the Q2, perhaps the reporter took it's place.

"The holes" you are referring to are the mic and speaker. If you do not use it for video, it is recommended that you cover them to prevent dust from entering. I have a Q-P and I have them covered.

My Q is over 5 years old and is with me every day, indoors and out, in any weather, and on at least 4 continents.  Perhaps I'm just lucky but I've never taped the holes and have had no issues.  However, if you don't need the mic and speaker, taping couldn't hurt, assuming the tape is neutral enough not to mar the finish of the camera.  Also, if you want to hear the electronically generated sounds the camera makes (fake shutter click, in-focus beep, and so on), taping the speaker might prevent you from hearing them.  In my case, I always turn off all the sounds on my cameras.  The camera is so quiet with that setting, my subjects close to me don't know that I've taken their photos.

Although I think the dust issue on the Q was blown out of proportion to some degree, I would agree with the rest that if you don't do a lot of video it is a good idea to tape the mic/speaker holes.

I've sold like a dozen of the original Q's (we are a Canadian Leica dealer)...I have recommended all my customers tape the holes, which they have...in six years have never had one returned with dust on the sensor.

Show us some of your results.  Maybe we can figure out what went wrong.
