Trade your D2 for D3..are you happy?

I upgraded 3 months ago now. Sold my beloved D2 on eBay and got the D3 with loyalty voucher. I have to say, at first I was not convinced, but I am now getting used to it and have bought some R lenses. The results are great! Well, for an amateur like myself. Some of my pics are here. The first 5 pics were shot using the D2. The rest with the D3.

I would def upgrade given an opportunity.

I made the trade out with Leica and am really beginning to enjoy the D3. Although I like the results from the kit lens I must admit it's size is a bit of a disappointment. If anyone has any experience with a physically smaller zoom lens on the D3 body and am enjoying the results I'd love to know what zoom you're using. I like the wide side of the kit lens but wouldn't mind less telephoto.

As has been stated before - the D2 and D3 are completely different beasts.

The D3 is heavier, and the lens seems sometimes unwieldy - it's large.

With time, the D3 will give you the rewards the D2 does - the image quality isn't really comparable.

The D3 is faster and more versatile, while the D2 is a intimate, relaxed camera.

I haven't used my LC1 (the D2 clone) as much since I've gotten accustomed to the D3 - but do reach out and grab it when it's going to be a much more "leisurely" shoot.

I'd try to hold on to the D2 or grab an LC1 (just beware of the serial number range). Or if you want, and as has been suggested many times before, grab an L1 for even less than the discounted D3 rate.

As indicated elsewhere, now that my D2 is just about to go for its visit to Solms via MK (estimated 8 weeks), I have been contemplating what to do a) if I get an offer, or B) if I don't and it comes back refreshed. I already have an L1, but do I expend the £ for the red dot, and sell off the surplus gear? Well that depends on one's view of Leica's involvement with the 4/3 system, and also of its general future (cue anti-4/3 rants here - please no - there's another thread for that). And why should I spend £ on what is essentially a duplicate?

Re the future of 4/3, I had a brief try-out of a pre-production E-3 a couple of days ago and it promises to be a cracker. The VF is very bright and clear and the AF amazingly quick on the new 12-60. The OIS seems to be very good as weel. We await the reviews but so far the photos published look promising. 4/3 technology will advance just the same as other formats, so advances in IQ will occur. If Panasonic use some of the same technology then their camera might be a good 'un, and the 4/3 may well have a future. Will Leica 'adopt' that Panasonic, or produce their own?

I have however decided to keep my D2, as I find it, despite its faults, a great camera to use and it produces wonderful results.

I too have earlier this week despatched my D2 to MK with suspected sensor failure and will also probably face the same dilemma if I am offered an upgrade.

There is talk about the bulk of the D3 lens - looking at the Leica web site it really does look an unwieldy beast.

Does anyone know if Leica plan to release a less bulky standard lens - perhaps fixed focal length or shorter range zoom to make the camera less bulky. Or is the only option a adaptor and R lens.

Also does anyone know if the D3 with the bulky lens will fit a Leica Billingham Combo bag okay.

I can currently get a D2 with square hood plus10x32 Ultravids in mine - but if I get the D3 would I still be able to do the same?

Hi,

My R lenses are;

Leitz 180mm F2.8 and Leica 80mm F1.4 ROM lens. I use the genuine Leica R to D adapter, both lenses are fantastic. As they are 360mm and 160mm by 35mm equiv.

I also have the Billingham-Leica bag. You cannot get the D3 in it unless alone, it will not take 1 extra lens, but is great for 3 lenses. I now just use if for the 3 extra lenses I have.

Oh BTW my other lens in the Olympus 40-150mm AF zoom.

Although the D3 looks bulky and despite its size it is not unwieldy and is well balanced.

I have a Billingham Alice, which I got for my D2. It does take the D3 - just - lens downwards, not sideways, and will also take the 25/1.4, preferably without its lens hood which is very bulky. Not much room for anything else though.

If the Combo is bigger than the Alice then you might be ok.

May seems a bit off thread but in fact not really.

I'll keep my D2 for my daughter for her future photography learning,

enjoy my M8 / MP as real intimate cameras,

and purchase the new Olympus E3 for great viewfinder, fast autofocus lens and manual R lenses,

still an acceptable package in weight as compare to other dslr systems. Cheers ...

I have an E1 with much brighter viewfinder to focus than my L1. I have bunch of R lenses and waiting for R10. the L1 viewfinder is darker so I ended up using confirm focus. The D2 I had is smaller but limited in ISO settings and a liitle bit flimsy when compared to L1/Digilux 3. I use my E1 with the 14-50 leica lens and definitely an very nice match. The E1 has the original Kodak CCD chip so the colors are very nice very kodachrome like.

Had a try of a pre-production E3 - seems excellent - very good VF and lightningly fast AF.
