So OP in the future do not confirm you want to reformat your Internal Memory after hitting reformat Internal Memory. To me it seems clear what I am doing when I erase or reformat any memory on my M11 or M11M. Yes, we all make mistakes and sorry you did.

Or did your camera do something you did not ask it to do?

Well, formatting the storage with images on it would indeed be a strange thing to do.
In my case it was a combination of muscle memory of performing a delete operation and confirming it, the fact that "Delete all" is located just below "Delete single" and the fact that this is my first digital Leica.

No lessons here. OK so the OP did not mention he was deleting files from the playback menu so how could I know that?

Now, after rereading his first note he was in fact deleting from the internal memory.

I think that the OP did the same mistake as I did : in play mode, hit menu and select delete all and hit yes … it happens  really too easily when you want to delete only one photo. « Delete all » should not so close and so easy to select… now I know…

@algrove : no need for a lesson or a lecture about my own stupidity, thank you 🙂

Yes, this is exactly what happened. It's of course completely my fault, but it's also a bad design of the menu, which can have disastrous affects on first-time users.

ooops, what a pity, sorry to hear !  at least you got hold of a new 'impeccable' M11 body !

although it will never replace your photos and sujets, as priceless, timeless and unique as they came at times :  12345 ...
