How can I tell what size filter for my (new to me) 180 3.4 APO takes .... Serial number is 29470xx

BTW if earlier version do I need a retaining ring ?

Difficult to answer with the serial number you mention -  since lenses up to 2947023 needed Serie 7.5 filters, for which you needed a retention ring, which had the order number 442-085.015-005. Later examples have E60-Filters.
