drjonb Posted April 8, 2023 Share #1  Posted April 8, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just got the new Sigma 10x zoom.  All taken with SLS-2 at 1600 ISO, handheld, one stop from wide open, approx 600mm focal length.  Optical performance appears outstanding at the long end, and considering the price, this lens offers amazing value in my view.  Welcome, dear visitor! Thanks for these images - looking forward seeing more examples with this lens! Q: How is the af, particularly on the Lumix S5 II since this body have the (improved) af-machinery to be expected in forthcoming incarnations of L-bodies.

jaapv Posted April 16, 2023 Share #7 Â Posted April 16, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) Are you using Electronic Shutter? Because I seem to notice a slight lack of acuity in the images. That could be shutter slap, which generates high-frequency micro-blur which neither OIS nor shutter speed can prevent on long lenses.

Is it also possible that the processing to achieve the 2.44MB constraint for posting is causing what you are seeing?

AKA "bite". I have tried to simulate the effect using Topaz Photo AI:   Welcome, dear visitor! This shot was definitely not as sharp or with the same bite as other shots, because the OIS couldn’t cope with my shake and movement of the subject; this is the constraint of the lack of aperture with this lens. But I like the squirrel’s expression, and to get that extra bite in the same conditions would cost 5x as much for the lens and probably at least another 3kg! I love this lens though, great versatility, excellent IQ, and brilliant value in my opinion.
jaapv Posted April 16, 2023 Share #13  Posted April 16, 2023 In that case just use Topaz 😉

drjonb Posted April 16, 2023 Author Share #15  Posted April 16, 2023 Maybe this has too much processing but it does have a lot of pop or bite. Welcome, dear visitor! A monopod greatly increased my keepers with this lens and lets me shoot non-moving subjects down to about 1/125 sec. at 600mm. I know this will sound silly, but make sure you're using the stabilization of the lens and not the IBIS of the camera. The 60-600 comes from the factory with the stabilization switch set to OFF!
