V2cruise Posted March 25, 2023 Share #1 Â Posted March 25, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello all, I'm at my wits end! I've been trying to figure out what filters these lenses use and cannot find correct information. Both are earlier models and the literature I've seen shows they use series 8 (and in one case series 8/5 for the telyt, whatever that is) filters but that does not appear to be the case. I sourced a 67mm polarizer filter and a Leica series 8 - 67mm adapter but the adapter is not wide enough to thread into either lens. I've looked at several filter data bases and they all show the same information so I am hoping that someone has used one of these lenses and can shed some light on the subject. Thank you. Advertisement Posted March 25, 2023 Posted March 25, 2023 Hi V2cruise, Take a look here Filters for 250mm f4 Telyt-R and 180mm f2.8 Elmarit-R. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
dpitt Posted March 25, 2023 Share #2 Â Posted March 25, 2023 Do you have the version I ? Then it is https://wiki.l-camera-forum.com/leica-wiki.en/index.php/250mm_f/4_Telyt-R_I And it can have either Series 8 or E55 filters. For Series 8 you need thishttps://classic.leica-camera.com/at/en/lcc/Leica-14165-E72-Filter-adapter-for-Series-VIII/24454-19 For version II it is just E67 filtershttps://wiki.l-camera-forum.com/leica-wiki.en/index.php/250mm_f/4_Telyt-R_II Version I of the 180mm Elmarit uses the same Series 8 filters as the 250mmhttps://wiki.l-camera-forum.com/leica-wiki.en/index.php/180mm_f/2.8_Elmarit-R_I Version 2 is E67https://wiki.l-camera-forum.com/leica-wiki.en/index.php/180mm_f/2.8_Elmarit-R_II
Lux50 Posted March 25, 2023 Share #3 Â Posted March 25, 2023 My 250/4 Telyt-R V1 uses Series 8 filters. A Series 8 UV & a Series 8 yellow filter are the only filters I have used with it in many years of ownership.

I have version I and did see the wiki.l article saying it uses series 8 or E55 filters.  E55 filters didn't make much sense since that would be so much smaller than the lens thread and AFAIK there is no internal filtering. It should be series 8 for both lenses but I have the Leica 14264 step ring to E67 and it is too narrow for the lens and will not attach.

Lux50 Posted March 26, 2023 Share #6 Â Posted March 26, 2023 The retaining ring is #14165.

It's so confusing, 14165 in my references show up like a step ring to E72 and 14169 is the code that appears as the retaining ring. Honestly, I used to find Leica L and M codes confusing but R is a whole new ballgame. I'm wondering if picking up the 14165 and a 72mm polarizing filter will be the best route for me.

I happen to have these two types of the 250mm F4 Telyt R (I). One of them uses the 14165 ring for the series VIII filter. The other one is larger in diameter and it does not fit the 14165. I measured it to have 72,xx mm inner diameter. AFAIK this points to a E72 filter size. Unfortunately I did not have a E72 filter at hand to confirm it fits. So there are 2 versions of the 250mm Telyt-R! Unfortunately I also don't have a 72mm filter available but can probably stop by a camera store and see if it fits before purchasing something else. Thanks for sharing your knowledge on the subject. Victor P.S. Antwerp is a beautiful city. I used to take the train there from Amsterdam with colleagues while I was training there in the early 1990s. StFreud Posted March 27, 2023 Share #10  Posted March 27, 2023 For example this is my "solution": My 4/250 mm has a 72 mm screw mount (female). And I took a adapter 14165 to adapt a series 8 filter to a 72 mm screw mount to a lens. On the fotos you can see the details. The 14165 adapter has a diameter who fits into the lensbody. And a normal filter has as wider diameter as 72 mm, so it cannot screw into the objektiv. Another possibility is an 72 mm filter tube, so the filter could be outside of the front of the lens. I hope, my photos can explane my words it a bit better. PS: The glue points fixed the series 8 filter in the adapter, because I hat first only one part of the adapter. A origin adapter has two parts normally. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members!
