Who's using the 90mm 1:2.0 Summicron?

I'm reading Puts' Compendium to go to sleep and he raves about the 90/2.0 but I see little discussion of it here.

 

Is it just a redheaded step-child due to the M8's cropped FOV making it, a 120 effectively?

 

 

75mm seems to be the upper bound for the M8 users here. Any one using the 90/2.0?

 

How is it on the M8?

I certainly use it, my favourite 90 bought as a late addition on ebay.

 

The colour performance of the lens is spectacular, images have a remarkable vibrancy than I also see in the 28 Summicron. Tough to focus wide open (along with the Noctilux and 75/1.4) but not as bulky as either of those. Great lens.

 

Does represent the upper focal length limit for me, I've never been tempted by the 135 even though some have been successful with it.

I am using it as a portrait lens and love it. Sharp to crisp details, great colours and nice OOF rendition. I currently have the pre-AA version but will check out if the AA can still do better.

 

The pre-Asph is a fabulous value-for-money lens I would say. Unfortunately it is not in Sean's test IIRC.

of the 90 Summicron & use it on my M8

it is a second generation model that I saw languishing in a camera store's used lens department & got for a bargain

I understand the latest version is smaller ...mine is a good deal larger than my 75 Summilux

I have little problem focusing it on the M8, but I use a magnifier on my eyepiece

it draws well & has fine bokeh ...I understand the latest version is superior in just about every aspect

here are some examples, both hand held & with the aperture at f2.4

mine seems to handle specular highlights well and it has lovely bokeh, though generally I prefer the 75 Summilux to it on all accounts

90 Summicron pre asph is about the best value piece of glass in the leica lineup at the moment.

It reminds me so much of the 75 Summilux in the way it's fingerprint is softer wide open, getting sharper as you beging to close it down. Almost 2 lenses in one. €500 - €600 for good 4th gen copies there is no reason not to have one, mind you the price will start to rocket if interest in it picks up.

as others said, the 2/90 is a great lens and fantastic value for money I might add - I use a pre-ASPH version and just love it. Together ith the 1.4/75 lux they give me all I need for portraiture, their signature is similar (I own both in the pre-ASPH flavour), built, handling etc is just superb. I have both the Apo-Asph as well as the previous version. I made a comparison in a recent thread:

I like the 90mm a lot and both versions are very valuable (the pre-asph even more valuable for its signature and lower price tag second hand).

I have the last pre-ASPH version. I use it much more than I use my 75 lux because it has a similar signature, but is much lighter and a little smaller. I keep a magnifier on my M's all the time, so focusing it is not a problem.
