photolady Posted November 5, 2007 Share #1 Posted November 5, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a real problem with my M8. Bought it in June of this year and have had the batteries discharge even when I don't have the camera on. After a short number of shots- not more than around 10 or so (dng) the battery fails. After Leica checked it out for 6 weeks found nothing wrong with the camera. I am waiting for a new battery and if that does not work wonder if anyone has tried the Impact camera battery sold as an alternate for the M8??? I have an R-D1 and never had a problem with the battery

Shootist Posted November 5, 2007 Share #2 Posted November 5, 2007 I have 2 of those batteries and they work BUT the only problem with them is they will not show a full charge on the camera battery meter unless you fully drain them and then do a recharge. I have been using the 2 I have for the past few weeks and they seem to last as long as the Leica batteries.
photolandscape Posted November 5, 2007 Share #3 Posted November 5, 2007 Not sure if the Impact battery is the same as the 2 M8 batteries I bought through a dealer in Hong Kong. They were cheap--something like $25 each I think. They are really only good as a backup of last resort. I keep them in a bag, just in case. I have had to use them but typically, whereas I can usually do 300+ shots (2 files for each--jpg and DNG) with one Leica battery, I am lucky to get half that many shots before the aftermarket batteries conk out. Of course they were very inexpensive in relation to the Leica batteries.

malcolm.mcintyre Posted November 5, 2007 Share #5 Posted November 5, 2007 I have had problems with the Leica batteries too. As suggested, putting them through a couple of aggressive charge/discharge cycles seems to help.
fotografr Posted November 5, 2007 Share #6 Posted November 5, 2007 If the batteries are discharging when the camera is off, this would seem to indicate a problem with the camera (switch?) and not the batteries.
photolady Posted November 5, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted November 5, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) thanks to all for your imput. I ran another test today just to make sure. I got 51 shots with the dng setting on a 2 gig card and left the camera on so it went to auto off after 5 minutes before the battery shut down completely. That is a lot better than my prior experiences. I guess I will try discharging the batteries again several times and then recharging again. Thanks again. BUT- I have to say I LOVE this camera....... wparsonsgisnet Posted November 5, 2007 Share #8 Posted November 5, 2007 Edith, I use Leica-branded batteries in my M8. When shooting, I get about 300 pix, with review on (3 seconds), and the camera on all the time I am shooting. I shoot both a hi-res jpg and a dng. Or, when walking around and shooting occasionally, I get about 3 hours of battery use. BTW, when I tried calibrating the Li-ion battery by a discharge and recharge, leaving the camera on until it shut down reset the counter on my images. It's easily fixed (that's easy to say ) of course, but you may notice this effect. When you say the camera is "not on" do you mean it is switched to Off, or it is on but not displaying anything? Bill I have done the drain down several time on both my bodies and have never had the image counter reset back to default L100-0001. In know others have had this happen also but it is NOT normal. While we're on the subject of not normal did you ever have your camera switch fixed so you don't have to hit the shutter release to turn it fully on. No, I didn't send it in for a switch fix. Is still works, so technically ain't broke and I can't do without it unless it is broke. I'm glad to hear that others have had this paranormal problem.
