35mm ASPH cron lens hood

My 35mm cron is more or less permanently attached to my M8 despite a choice of other lenses, but the lens hood supplied drops off with shameful regularity. It will fairly easily pull off without depressing the catch and if knocked even gently it just drops off. I'm likely to loose it soon!

Is this normal for the lens hood (I fear it is given the design) and is there an alternative - one that stays put? Love the lens, despise the hood! Apologies if mentioned in a previous thread but failed to find it quickly.

The lens hood attaches firmly to my 35 Cron ASPH but the rectangular cover/cap does not attach securely to the hood. I lost my first one in the first hour in the field. $30+.

IMHO, the cap should NEVER be used when the lens is on the camera unless the camera and/or the lens is in the camera bag.

I've lost my lens cap 3 times and recovered it each time. I now feel a spiritual bond to it.

One time on a 17 mile bike ride on back roads, went back an hour later and found it on the ground. Once on 65th Street near Lincoln Center came back several hours later and found it in the gutter. Yesterday I lost it in Riverside Park near 104th Street, came back around two hours later and found it on the ground.

The good thing is it looks useless to anyone who doesn't have a 35 cron, doesn't roll and is fairly wind resistant.

And as to the original question, the hood is very secure and has never come off.

Peter,

Providing that I make sure that the little white line on the hood is lined up with the little white line on the lens, then the tab on the hood slips into the slot on the lens, the hood moves another 2 or 3 mm towards the lens and the sprung catches lock around the indented metal on the lens and the hood is firmly attached. No amount of pulling will dislodge it unless I depress the catches when it comes away smoothly.

Are you sure that the sprung teeth are not damaged and are fully engaging with the indented metal on the lens?

Pete.

Lucky you, Robert. I lost mine on an archeological site in Mexico and retracing my steps was unsuccessful. I don't know what the locals made of it. Maybe they were replacing their lost cap.

What's a lens cap? ;)

The 35 cron ASPH is also the defacto lens for my M8, but I don't ever put a lens cap (or rather hood cap) on it, in the bag or in use. I do leave the hood on at all times, and yes, mine stays on securely. You should get yours replaced or checked out.

I also had that problem with the hood for the 35 f/2 Cron. It seemed that the hood catch pins (I use the word pins for the lack of a better word) do not seat well into the groove on the lens. I fixed this by grinding/cutting off the lip on the inside of the hood that hits the front of the lens. That let the pins seat more securely into the groove and then it didn't come off.

The funny part of this is the hood for the 28/2.8 Elmarit ASPH is the same exact hood. When I got the 28 I put the hood that came with it on the 35 and it was tight and never fell off.
