Jamie Roberts Posted November 4, 2007 Share #21 Posted November 4, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I hate to ask this, but can someone with the new firmware post a couple of high-ISO shots with people in tungsten light (set the WB to tungsten, too?) Thanks!
Advertisement Posted November 4, 2007 Posted November 4, 2007 Hi Jamie Roberts, Take a look here Leica Demo Day - Dale Labs. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
4season Posted November 4, 2007 Share #22 Posted November 4, 2007 Carlos, thanks for the sample images: The ISO 3200 in particular looks really encouraging. Noisy, yes, but what a quality of noise! Looks very good in black and white, and maybe with some chroma noise reduction, color as well. Jeff
etrigan63 Posted November 4, 2007 Author Share #23 Posted November 4, 2007 Here is another ISO 640 shot with a little Bibble Pro + Noise Ninja thrown in.
guidomo Posted November 5, 2007 Share #24 Posted November 5, 2007 Thanks Carlos for sharing! This is looking extremely promising. Can't wait for the FW update.

rosuna Posted November 6, 2007 Share #26 Posted November 6, 2007 Carlos, how much the high ISO noise has improved in your opinion?
SJP Posted November 6, 2007 Share #27 Posted November 6, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Our (better) German side has a letter to the dealers in this thread: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/forum-zur-leica-m8/37929-firmwareupdate-1-110-a.html Rough & ready translation: Firmware update will be available form Leica website from 7/11/07 (or 11/7/07 for US citizens) Update deals with the following: 6 bit coding for summmarit lenses time interval pre and main flash is changed for Leica SF 24 D and SCA compatible improved scroll wheel functionality (prevents "through scrolling" - is what it says) improved the battery power indication thing improved the French menu (not kiddding) this sounds like an affront to French cuisine Thats all ...... Hopefully more stuff has been tweaked but not (yet) to their full satisfaction. This is the optimistic scenario. The pictures shown in this thread look like more has been done than listed in the letter. Stephen

etrigan63 Posted November 7, 2007 Author Share #29 Posted November 7, 2007 Carlos, how much the high ISO noise has improved in your opinion? 1250 has now become usable with 2500 reserved for B&W. 640 joins the other two for everyday shooting. A big improvement from before.
robertwright Posted November 7, 2007 Share #30 Posted November 7, 2007 now that the new firmware is out this begs the question, what were we really seeing? Is it that bibble does a better job than C1, Lr, Aperture, etc? When I look at the examples posted in this thread, the do look improved. So I really don't know what to conclude. My own side by side of the new firmware and old firmware says that the noise is unchanged. Guess I will download bibble and give it a try, not that I really want to be changing raw converters now. sean_reid Posted November 7, 2007 Share #32 Posted November 7, 2007 There is no change in noise reduction in the new firmware. ISO noise should be unchanged. Cheers, Sean
guywalder Posted November 8, 2007 Share #33 Posted November 8, 2007 The firmware, beside recognizing the Summarits, is supposed to improve AWB performance and reduce noise at high ISO. I haven't had a chance to test the high ISO stuff yet, but the AWB is a bit better. Carlos, was this what the Leica guys said, or the impression from the pictures, or what? As Sean says, the FW is now public (at least a new version is..), but no official claims for AWD or noise, and apparently no change therein. If I understand correctly, all your pictures from the event were made with a camera that belongs to Leica? Was there any suggestion that the hardware was different in any way, other than the new lenses of course... I dont think noise is the be all and end all, but to have this teaser then not see an improvement is frustrating. cheers, Guy

mwalker649 Posted November 8, 2007 Share #36 Posted November 8, 2007 There is no change in noise reduction in the new firmware. ISO noise should be unchanged. Cheers, Sean Sean can you tell if the AWB has been changed? I can't tell a difference. The Leica lab dude must have a different beta version?
bradreiman Posted November 8, 2007 Share #37 Posted November 8, 2007 well i went out shooting today in the desert and if anything AWB is worse. I had more misses than usual and the were all very cold, something Ive rarely seen. could be a coincidence, dont know. i shoot raw and jpeg so it doesn't matter but I thought it was worth noting....B
fotografr Posted November 8, 2007 Share #38 Posted November 8, 2007 I wasn't aware of any claims of high ISO improvements with the firmware upgrade, but I shot this just a little while ago at ISO 640 and to the best of my memory it is quite a bit better than what I was getting before. Whether that is actually the case or nor, I am extremely satisfied with the M8 performance at this setting. Welcome, dear visitor! barjohn Posted November 9, 2007 Share #39 Posted November 9, 2007 If anything, it appears to me to be actually worse than version 1.107. The link below will take you to my iDisk web site where you can download some .dng files taken first with 1.107 and then with 1.110. They were taken at 640, 1250 and 2500. Numbers 2672-2677 were taken with 1.107. I shot two different subjects at each ISO. Numbers 2678-2683 were taken with 1.10. Lighting was tungsten and the WB was set to auto. The lens was the Leica 28/2.8 ASPH with aperture set at 2.8. You can download the original files and view under whatever converter you use. .Mac - iDisk Actually, after looking more closely using both LR and C! B4 I would say 1.110 is much worse at high ISO. orjanf Posted November 9, 2007 Share #40 Posted November 9, 2007 Actually, after looking more closely using both LR and C! B4 I would say 1.110 is much worse at high ISO. After just looking at the 2500 ISO images of the ones you provided The 1.07 is very sharp for 1/30:th. tripod? After adjusting the exposure and touching the recovery slider in lightroom to make the histograms as identical as I could (one was at 1/20 the other at 1/30) they look to my eyes identical noise-wise? This is looking in areas with no detail where the extra blur on the 1.1 image does not distract.
