MitchoIankov Posted November 2, 2007 Share #1 Posted November 2, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have read that Eye-Fi Card Review: 1. Introduction: Digital Photography Review today and it looks like a good workaround the bottom plate remove/put back at least when not many images are taken. I am a bit annoyed every time when I have to take the bottom plate off to upload the images to the PC. Some times it is only one or two. Is it only me? Advertisement Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 Hi MitchoIankov, Take a look here Maybe a solution for the M8 bottom plate. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Paul_S Posted November 2, 2007 Share #2 Posted November 2, 2007 I am afraid I do not understand your English. You like to replace or remove the M8 bottom plate?
Kent10D Posted November 2, 2007 Share #3 Posted November 2, 2007 I think the OP means that since the Eye-Fi is basically an SD memory card with built-in Wi-Fi, it will be handy to transfer a few shots at a time to a computer without having to remove and replace the bottom plate all the time. I'm curious as to just how well Wi-Fi is going to work through that metal bottom plate, though.
john_nyc Posted November 2, 2007 Share #4 Posted November 2, 2007 Yes, I was wondering if it'd work through the brass bottom plate, too. The other thing I was wondering about this product was the write speed of the flash ram itself. The product's website doesn't mention it at all, which leads me to believe that it's on the slow side. The M8 isn't on the list of compatible cameras, anyway. John
george + Posted November 2, 2007 Share #5 Posted November 2, 2007 This looks like an interesting solution for those who do not like to remove the bottom plate. Now if we could have a similar solution for charging the battery. . . .
Perspectics Posted November 2, 2007 Share #6 Posted November 2, 2007 Why don't you use the USB cable? You can plug the cable into the M8 without touching the bottom plate and then download your pictures... its not as fast as an SD card reader but works with no problem. farnz Posted November 2, 2007 Share #7 Posted November 2, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Since the card will include a WiFi transmitter and use more power than a non-WiFi SD card most of the additional power will be converted into heat energy. I wonder whether the additional heat would affect the M8's operation, or perhaps worse, affect the warranty. Pete.
TEBnewyork Posted November 2, 2007 Share #8 Posted November 2, 2007 Since the card will include a WiFi transmitter and use more power than a non-WiFi SD card most of the additional power will be converted into heat energy. I wonder whether the additional heat would affect the M8's operation, or perhaps worse, affect the warranty. Pete. My first thought when reading about it wasn't the heat but could it provide interference with the circuitry or in capturing the image while shooting right around the wifi hot spot. marknorton Posted November 2, 2007 Share #9 Posted November 2, 2007 It's a nice idea in theory, but as others have pointed out, the whole construction of the M8 is designed for EMC Compatability - to stop it radiating RG energy and causing interference, so at least some attenuation of the signal would take place. Other cameras with WiFi adapters have an external aerial/antenna. The other issue is battery power. Having the WiFi adapter on all the time is bound to drain the battery faster which will mean you will have to take the bottom plate off to change it anyway. I had hoped for a series of alternative base-plates for the M8 - additional battery, Wi-Fi, Docking/Charger.
rob_x2004 Posted November 2, 2007 Share #10 Posted November 2, 2007 I had hoped for a series of alternative base-plates for the M8 - additional battery, Wi-Fi, Docking/Charger. Thats a good point. Id wonder about additional battery and maybe second cards, for belt and braces. Other people do it.
Photoskeptic Posted November 2, 2007 Share #11 Posted November 2, 2007 It must be you doesn't bother me at all. You have to take the plate off the film M's to change film so I see it as a natural extension of the M series bodies. No biggie, really.

@bumac Posted November 2, 2007 Share #13 Posted November 2, 2007 I agree also. It is like on my M6. I like the bottom-plate solution.
One Pic A Day Posted November 2, 2007 Share #14 Posted November 2, 2007 I almost enjoy the act of removing the plate. it reminds me of the old film days.
newyorkone Posted November 2, 2007 Share #15 Posted November 2, 2007 Another vote for the bottom plate just as it is. IMHO, it is a subtle reminder to remember to be thoughtful about your shooting despite having more capacity with the ever increasing storage size of SD cards. @bumac Posted November 2, 2007 Share #16 Posted November 2, 2007 So we never forget where we come from - Leica M rulez.
bradreiman Posted November 2, 2007 Share #17 Posted November 2, 2007 well I wonder if dealing with wifi would be all that much easier than twisting a piece of metal and removing the plate. you could even do it when you change the battery-which there is no workaround for that I know of. i don't mind the plate myself and like other above I kind of like it...b
Guest tummydoc Posted November 2, 2007 Share #18 Posted November 2, 2007 I join with the sensible minds who chuckle at the notion removing the bottom-plate represents a major inconvenience worthy of a workaround. I don't see how it's much more of a bother than flipping open a hatch, and even if one only shoots 36 of the possible 180 DNGs at a time on a 2GB SD card, one wouldn't be removing the bottom any more often than one would if changing films in an M7. gesper Posted November 2, 2007 Share #19 Posted November 2, 2007 Important to note: the Eye-fi only works for jpeg files. Does not work for RAW. That makes it useless for me.
photolandscape Posted November 2, 2007 Share #20 Posted November 2, 2007 There are few things in the midst of shooting that I just as soon not have to do as remove and replace the baseplate on the M8. I appreciate the design of the camera and Leica's efforts to keep it largely consistent design-wise with previous models. But really, what purpose does it serve? I'd rather have a SD card slot and a little trap door for exchanging the battery quickly when I'm photographing people. The less hassle, the better.
