Flash cable question

I have the SF24d. I've read that the Nikon SC-17 cable can be used for off camera flash. Do I need anything else or is it OK to use as is?

From pictures of the cable it looks like it attached to the hot shoe. Correct?

I'm brand new to flash that isn't integrated so be gentle.

Thanks,

terry

AFAIK it's only the older SC-17 that work and not the newer SC-21's

Not so sure about that. I think the newer Nikon cable is just updated so the cable comes out the side or the front, instead of the back. There is no difference in the contacts or the wires going from one part to the next.

Both Nikon TTL flash cables work fine. So do Contax TTL flash cables. They all have the right number of contacts in the right place to line-up with the ones in the M8 shoe.
