Advertisement Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 Hi jklotz, Take a look here Would you buy a used M8?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
gmaurizio Posted October 31, 2007 Share #2 Posted October 31, 2007 Of course I will. Ebay? That depends on the seller and their return policy. Try PopFlash, they are very serious and their description of used items is honest.
thai.charlie Posted October 31, 2007 Share #3 Posted October 31, 2007 I'd buy the seller first, then buy the M8, if you know what I mean. I got my "demo" from PopFlash.
AGeoJO Posted October 31, 2007 Share #4 Posted October 31, 2007 From a reputable private seller I would, especially if he were local from me. The seller can render a very good "history" of the quirks the camera has. I also would not have any problems buying a used M8 from a local dealer with some kind of warranty. On the other hand, there are certain things I wouldn't mind buying off eBay but a Leica M8 is one of them.
egibaud Posted October 31, 2007 Share #5 Posted October 31, 2007 I'd make sure that changing owner does not cancel the garanty first.
Guest tummydoc Posted October 31, 2007 Share #6 Posted October 31, 2007 I would buy a used M8 provided it was an official Leica Demo and provided the cost was no more than $4000 US. I am becoming more and more convinced that some of the unreliability was sorted by the most recent batch (ser# 332x,xxx). That is not to say an earlier body is definitely unreliable, however I would not buy one without a warranty unless it was round about $2000US. rwchisholm Posted October 31, 2007 Share #7 Posted October 31, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I purchased a demo with a warranty for $4k. Works flawlessly (heck, it looked brand new). No complaints, love it -rob
palker Posted October 31, 2007 Share #8 Posted October 31, 2007 Well I followed this thought too. In the end I decided that the warranty was more important than a few $ discount. So I found my local dealer and handed over my hard earned savings. I hope I never need his support, but I feel assured I have it. However. I do and have bought glass from eBay, there by saving more $$$s. Like the above replies have said, check out all the sellers responses, and never trust a high value sale from a first time seller, and try to find somebody who has more to loose than you do. Good luck.
Shootist Posted October 31, 2007 Share #9 Posted October 31, 2007 Would I buy a used M8? No I don't think so unless it was cheap, like what tummydoc quoted ($2000-$2500). Bear in mind that a Demo M8 that comes with some factory/Leica warranty, even if it's only 1 year, is not the same as a used M8 from a private person. Buying from a private person you have NO warranty and no real way to register your camera with Leica.
Daniel Ortego Posted November 1, 2007 Share #10 Posted November 1, 2007 Would you buy a used M8? What about via ebay? Any pitfalls beyond the obvious? As with some others’ I don’t believe so although I do believe you could save a bundle. Personally, I prefer a baseline by which I know full well the cameras’ history, condition and most importantly, a factory warranty. stunsworth Posted November 1, 2007 Share #11 Posted November 1, 2007 Would I buy a used M8? No I don't think so unless it was cheap, like what tummydoc quoted ($2000-$2500) At that price - a third of the current UK retail price, I'd assume it was a scam. The current used prices are nowhere near that.
Shootist Posted November 1, 2007 Share #12 Posted November 1, 2007 At that price - a third of the current UK retail price, I'd assume it was a scam. The current used prices are nowhere near that. Right BUT "I" would rather buy new then paid any more then what was quoted for a used unit. Even at that price I would want to know what the history of the camera is and have at least a copy of the original receipt. Otherwise I'd buy a new one, just like I did for both the M8's I own. fotografr Posted November 1, 2007 Share #13 Posted November 1, 2007 I wouldn't buy an M8 without a warranty. Period.
stunsworth Posted November 1, 2007 Share #14 Posted November 1, 2007 Even at that price I would want to know what the history of the camera is and have at least a copy of the original receipt Ed, I agree with you. The only point that I was making is that anyone selling an M8 at that price is almost 100% guaranteed to be a scammer.
Guest tummydoc Posted November 1, 2007 Share #15 Posted November 1, 2007 One other thing to consider: neither a used nor a demo M8 entitles the buyer to 2 free IR filters (roughly a $200+ value depending on the filters chosen), so one should mentally tack that onto the price paid. Shootist Posted November 1, 2007 Share #16 Posted November 1, 2007 Ed, I agree with you. The only point that I was making is that anyone selling an M8 at that price is almost 100% guaranteed to be a scammer. You're probably correct if the sale is from someplace like eBay.
