Why does the guy in the photo have a magenta beard? :D

Well, since we know for a fact from Leica's official statement is that only black synthetics are affected  , the only possible answer is that he's wearing a fake beard...isn't it awesome what a powerful tool the M8 is for investigative journalism :D

That was my guess as well; so now all investigators need to add an M8 and a set of tungsten flash bulbs (what) to their outfit for filing evidence.

Great marketing! Albert

Google search foreign fighters. Look for the Russian guy with the red beard. It's not difficult to find him.

In a way I agree with you Paul, in that most prints made from a mini-lab will be 6x4, or probably 8x6 at the most. At those sizes just about any 3 mp camera would produce something acceptable.

But the real interest comes when you want to print bigger, which is something many enthusiasts want to. Then pixels - and by that I mean good quality pixels - become important.

Sorry, but having a shot appear in the Times doesn't give it any further street cred.

It's a pro level camera - why WOULDN'T it be used in the field? I certainly expect the NG guys to experiment with them as well, if they already haven't.

At the end of the day...its still a tool.....

well maybe so--i've had pics from my faulty canon run in that pub too, so i guess even a canon can take a shot good enough for them. but the point is that some of the amazing photographers who place regularly (which i am NOT one of) in that top paper find the m8 a useful tool to accomplish their work. if you are on the hook to deliver an assignment with world class editors, you better trust your gear. the m8 does make the cut, although you probably do need 2 as with any camera.

on images sharpness--many only print up to 8 x 10 or smaller; however, editors often critically look at much larger images/files before they select them. mega-pixels do count--especially good ones. so does sharpness, which is where the m8 excels.

Sorry, but having a shot appear in the Times doesn't give it any further street cred. - Of course it does. After that abomination of a trip to the Southlands by the folks over at Luminous, and the whining about this and that Leica failing, I'm quite happy to be seein' the beastie being used in the field to do actual reportage stuff.

It's a pro level camera - why WOULDN'T it be used in the field? - Maybe because the "field" is full of Cannonites and Nikonians who think a camera has to be a phallic symbol?

At the end of the day...its still a tool - A Ferrari is a tool also, but you don't see many of them in the bush country parked at a campfire in a world where the next guy over the hill might be followed by a lot of other furry, smelly guys with AK-47s and a copy of the Qu'ran.

Dan is right, a camera is a tool and the one you use needs to be appropriate for the job. The attributes I value in my M8 are size, simplicity and image quality. If I need to shoot with a long lens, take close-up photos or shoot quickly, I'll use my Canon. Having said that, I find the Leica to be endearing, but not the Canon -- it's just, well, a tool.

Leicas are fanatstic tools but so are Nikon's Canon's and I defy anyone to tell me looking at a print from a digi camera which was taken on a Leica or any other digi camera.

I agree, and think the Canons (I have no experience of digital Nikons) sometimes get slammed by people who have obviously never used them. But at the end of the day I prefer using a rangefinder to an SLR. It's just what I feel more comfortable with, using the lenses I use. That's why I prefer to use my M8 rather than my 5D.

I expect any M body that comes out of Solms to be able to withstand field use...pure & simple. Knowing that Pj's and other pros are using it for work in any publication is great for the marketing maws to boot - but honestly, no one should be shcoked by this.

Most of the Nikonians & Canonites out there using their gear as phallic symbols are gearheads or wannabes. I shoot with what I need to, to get the job done. Doesn't matter if it's a 300 2.8 or 35 Summilux - for myself or my employer - I use the proper tools for the situation. If a Leica M loaded with Portra is going to do it, tha's what I use. Likewise with the Nikon stuff. My peers go about their business the same way.

If the image is strong enough to get me to look and read the story further - the PHOTOGRAPHER has done their job. Sure, it's nice to know they used a Leica (especially since most of us loonies on here own them) - but it doesn't make me go nuts about it.

Do a Software Update.

There's already a patch fix for this, released at the weekend.

Mac OS X and iPod Troubleshooting, Support, and Help - MacFixIt

Andy, I've been to this site and tried the fixes listed there. They didn't solve my problem.

Did you mean to say there is a fix available to download?

tnx,
