gtownby Posted October 30, 2007 Share #1 Posted October 30, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've pre-ordered Sebastiao Salgado's new book, "Africa" which is due on Wednesday. Does anybody know if he is still shooting with a Leica M? (Film, of course.) His latest project, "Genesis," has some very big prints so I'm wondering if he's also using medium format or larger. zlatkob Posted October 30, 2007 Share #2 Posted October 30, 2007 It appears he has used Pentax medium format for this project: Salgado Story in The Guardian
gtownby Posted October 31, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted October 31, 2007 Thanks, Zlatko. That explains the large prints. Sorry for posting this on the digital forum, but after viewing some of Salgado's prints at a gallery in L.A., one can be tempted to put B&W film in an M and never think about color again. (Though I love my M8).
gverdon Posted October 31, 2007 Share #4 Posted October 31, 2007 Interesting... in a today interview for the Swiss paper "Le Temps" <http://www.letemps.ch/>, Salgado explain why he is persisting in shooting B&W and the difficulties it generates... Here is the excerpt in french and my very personal and quick translation: « Ce n'est pas un choix. » "Actually, it's not a choice, since the beginning I've always made B&W photographs. Moreover, I don't even recall where I put the rare color slides I've taken. I express myself in B&W, that's all. Besides, it's becoming more and more difficult to find papers, films or chemicals. Even though there still is a real place for B&W fashion or advertising photo, we are approaching the end of an era. I'm just waiting for a digital camera which could take real B&W photographs. The camera maker who will able to produce it will make a fortune!" Gérald
gtownby Posted November 1, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted November 1, 2007 Wow. Kind of a backhanded slap at the M8, but I'm willing to give him a break: Salgado's B&W work is simply on a different level than any other photojournalist. If any camera ever meets his digital expectations, my guess is that it will have a red dot (though covered with black tape).
