I intend to ask as many questions as I can about the upcoming "R10", the next "M digital" (both apparently to be unveiled at Photokina 08), along with possible new lenses, including a new Noctilux.

If there are any questions you would like to ask Leica USA (the R10, LeicaWorld issue 01/2007, firmware upgrades, etc...), please feel free to add them to this thread as I will most likely go to the Demo Day both today and tomorrow.

Best regards,

John F.

Michael,

Other than what has already been written about a new "R10" for Photokina 2008, no I can't say I really obtained any "new" info. I did get to try out all of the new Summarits, especially the new 35mm f2.5 Summarit. The focusing ring was extreeeeemely smooth! A bit too smooth for me I think. The Leica USA rep did remind me that these lenses were all "pre-production" samples, and that no one in North America had managed (yet) to get their hands on full production (including writers and testers).

I also found the diaphragm ring to be very close to the focusing ring. Too close as a matter of fact. Unlike my pre-asph Summicron-M 35mm, I found turning the diaphragm ring with my left index to be almost impossible. Then again, it was a pre-production lens ... In comparison to my Summicron, I found the 35mm Summarit to be taller (34mm vs 26mm) and slightly heavier. Strange for a lens that is slower ..

When I arrived at Camtec (around 14h30), there were two or three people at the Leica booth, along with the ever cheerful Gerry Smith (really nice guy). By the time we left for a photo presentation at the Van Houtte coffe shop next door (past 17h00), there must have been at least 20 people in the store (never saw so many Leica Ms in my life!). The presentation was given by the American documentary photographer George Zimbel, who has been living in Montreal for several years. He narrated his work, mostly done in the 1940's, 50's and 70's, all done in black & white film, and projected via a digital projector (Thanks Jean!). Wow! What a fantastic photographer this guy is - and what stories he had to tell! Look this guy up - well worth it !!

I'll try to post a separate thread about the Summarits in the Digital Forum.

Cheers,

John F.
