Light Lens Lab 50mm f/2 "Speed Panchro II" for Leica M

According to my eye and perception the SPII wide open has a strong similarity in rendering of both the glow and the bokeh to Steel Rim re-edition. It is more of a modern spin on the old flaws - both the original SP and the original Steel Rim render differently to their current counterpart remakes.

I had to do some focussing tests to check my 50mm Summilux ASPH on  M10M as I was suspicious that this combo had a backfocus problem.
Indeed, I found that there is a problem, and I have to send in the lens for maintenance now either to Wetzlar or to van Manen in the Netherlands.
In order to eliminate that the problem was caused by the M10M I did the same focus test with the rangefinder and compared this with focus peaking with the SP2.
I must say that I had not used the LLL lens after I had bought it 2 years ago.
First thoughts that came to my mind immediately when I saw the images, was that the rendering looks very much like the rendering of the second generation steel Rim Summilux.
So I can confirm your findings.

The rendering evokes scenes out of Raymond Chandler.  In particular, the ones in which Marlowe recovers after being knocked unconscious.

Having seen the newest LLL newsletter - I have more the impression it is the vision after I recover from a severe headache . . 😮‍💨

Or when I wear the wrong pair OF glasses.

The pairing of the LLL SPII 50 and SR reissue is a good one for matching the looks between 50 and 35. I can't think of another 50 that has the same glow. The big difference between these is that wide open at infinity, the SPII is sharp across the frame whereas the SR reissue "blooms" outward from the sharp center and becomes quite dreamy and foggy at the edges. I think the 35 Lux pre-ASPH v2 is closer to the LLL SPII for shooting wide open at infinity.

Sorry, I missed this discussion.  My copy of the LLL SP II in no way resembles the signature of theLeica SR II used wide open (It never occurs to me to stop either down…🤣). The Canon Lens 50mm 1:1.4, screw mount, when used at f/1.4 is very close to the Leica SR II signature.

regards, John

The SPII has to be shot at medium to long distances to get the glow. Also there is no "SR II" – there's one Steel Rim (with many changes during production, but they are differentiated by serial numbers not versions). The v2 I referred to is not the SR, but the second version without the actual steel rim.
