I think it’s actually - “un gondoliere” unless you specifically mean “the” gondolier rather than “a” gondolier (when it would be il gondoliere)

Basically there are plenty of Italian masculine nouns that end in ‘e’ not ‘o’ (and some annoying ones that even end in ‘a’ - like “un problema”) - slowly learning Italian here in NYC at L’Istituto Italiano di Cultura 😉

Nigel & others, I gladly take on board your corrections. We Australians are renown for our mono-linguistic skills (lack thereof!) and latterly appreciate instructive criticism as it comes. I would love to be able to speak any number languages, but with the time left to me I suspect it is better spent 'perfecting' that which I have some knowledge of. ie. Photography
