But sharpness is not everything, and a MTF won't tell you how a lens will render, what's the size, footprint, weight, if the autofocus is fast or slow, how's the bokeh and a myriad of other information that all together will allow you to assess a lens. Would you judge a car just by its engine power? I bet not, or we'd all be driving Formula 1 cars in our streets. None and all of them, and that's why I have 5 different 50mm, from Leica and other brands, because each one of them is good at something but not as good at something else, and I pick the right tool depending on the occasion. I'd probably pick the Summilux SL for studio portraits, but I wouldn't select it for landscapes, street photography or to go hiking all day. Other lenses may shine in these scenarios. Exactly, the SL 50mm Summicron followed the 50mm Summilux chronologically. But the time, for Mr. Karbe, it was his best. I even agreed with you that it is entirely subjective, and I have no intention of criticizing somebody else's choices. After all, only they can decide on the their best 50mm or any focal length/lens for that matter. I am curious what yours choices for a 50mm are, and for what reasons, please elaborate. I have the SL 50 APO Summicron - big and heavy, but I do like the rendering, the Zeiss Sonnar 50mm which I prefer for portraits and more dreamy subjects, the Summilux M Asph, which I have since my M days and kept it because it's an overall "good for everything" lens, except autofocus of course, the Sigma 45mm for light every day AF carry, a Contax 50mm F2 (I do have a perfectly working Contax camera), and a Helios 44-2 for when I want even more character, although it's a 58mm and not 50mm. I've actually been eyeing the Summilux SL myself for quite a while, although I think I may end up leaving it at home most of the time because it's a brick. We have several of the same 50mm's - SL Summicron, M lux pre-ash and ash, and helios. I have a contax 50mm f1.7 and both Leica R 50mm's. These images were shot with SL lux and a SL. https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1810116/
