In the last couple weeks I’ve rented both the APO and ASPH Summicrons. I currently have the Leica 24-70 and wanted something lighter and faster.

Pros for the APO: definitely has a special rendering, performs better in backlit situations, and can notice the difference in sharpness

Pros for the ASPH: lighter, focuses faster, is sharp enough (if I hadn’t seen the APO I wouldn’t have noticed the difference)

Im generally torn on which one to get. I really love the images from the APO, but think I probably would be happy with the ASPH - particularly if used prices come down because of the Leica deals. Also I could go get more M lenses which I enjoy using more when AF isn’t needed 😂

I like to think I couldn't be paid to give up my one of a kind Leica SL APOs. Not even if.... LOL. But who knows what tomorrow brings...or not. Personally, I bought the SL2 camera so I could use the SL 35 APO, adding the SL 50APO and SL 90APO lenses turned out to be icing on that super delicious cake. If the SL3 comes with something like the M11 sensor, I'll be over the moon...again.

OTOH, I am very happy to see how well the new Leica SL 35/50 ASPH lenses are doing with customers and reviewers. Personally, I don't care, not one bit if theses lenses are a Panasonic optical design. ( There are many more similar quiet arrangements by other brands even premium brands with various manufacturers for decades now). No secret, no surprise Leica and Panasonic have been collaborating for years already and just recently announced even more shared resources and projects going forward.

If size/weight/budget are priorities for your next 35/50 SL lenses, seems to me Leica/Panasonic delivered with these two lenses and I can see more of these type lenses in the future too. Good for the SL system, good for the customers and good for the L-Mount lens catalog that just keeps growing and growing.

Has anyone who bought the SL2/SL2s kit deal received their cash back offer yet? How long does it take for Leica to process the monies?

It’s not cashback and nothing to process, the amount is discounted at checkout — at least in the US where I live. You pay $4,895 instead of $6,195 for the SL2-S + 35/2 kit, for example. That’s what I bought because the deal is fantastic.

It says the same on the US website. You register for the Leica Customer Appreciation “voucher” online, then you receive an automatic email with a 9-digit number. You give that number to the Leica store and they deduct the amount when you pay. Call your Leica store if you don’t believe me.

Call your Leica store!

Yes, my guy is on leave for a couple of weeks. I did the math because midway waiting for the SL2s they swapped to the SL2 kit deal because of supply issues and I was okay with that and more than happy now. I think there may have been confusion at the time as I was suffering adverse health issues which have been ongoing so the process was a blur to me. At the time, the Store Manager hadn't processed one of these vouchers before and he mentioned a few things that I have realised were incorrect. I think my billing process was complicated with having to pay the balance for the SL2 deal but in the end I received an extra $900 discount when switching to the SL2/50 Summicron Kit. Couldn't be happier really.

What's wrong with Leica lenses made in Portugal and Canada? They have excellent reputation.

I own old Leica lenses made by Minolta, the quality is excellent. My 24 -70 SL is also made in Japan and is excellent. These Leica primes are made in Portugal (by Leica themselves ) and I have no reason to doubt  they'll be excellent too.

What I like about Sean Reid is that, unlike many other reviewers, he does not push his opinion onto the reader, nor does he structure the review so that the reader must come to one conclusion.
Even when I disagree with some of his articles, they are often very helpful to read.
