Paul_S Posted October 25, 2007 Share #1 Posted October 25, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, Inspired by the ongoing lens debates here, I recently acquired a S’cron90 (E55, non-ASPH, 11137, chrome) next to my existing copy of the Apo-ASPH version (I must have lost my mind sometime earlier this year). I post some pics here together with first impressions. The 3 pics here are taken with the non-AA version @ f/2.8 I used UV/IR filters and processed in C1 3.7.7. You can find full resolution pics in my iDisk Public Folder. Go to M8, next to both Summicron90 folders. Some pictues are taken with both lenses from a tripod each with different apertures. Sure the AA version is crispier wide open, and look at the shadow in Gallows picture: beautiful. The OOF area behind the focus point is very smooth for the non-AA as is the gender touch of this lens, even stopped down. The resistence to flare when taken a photograph against the light looks better with the non-AA (see picture of Yacht haven). The apochromatic correction is visible in the AA version. The focal length of the AA version seems slightly longer, which is only obvious in comparison. Both lenses perform very well on the M8 and the non-AA is a bargain second hand compared to a new AA. Thanks for watching. Enjoy. Boat: action Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Daniel Ortego Posted October 25, 2007 Share #2 Posted October 25, 2007 I really like "The Gallows" shot. The shadow details and balance. Regards,

Bob Ross Posted October 25, 2007 Share #4 Posted October 25, 2007 Hi Paul, Thanks for sharing the comparisons. First Guy convinces me to keep using my 35mm V4 cron and now you show mw that I can keep using my pA 90mm cron. Good news and I saved a bundle, too Bob
Eoin Posted October 25, 2007 Share #5 Posted October 25, 2007 Hi Paul, I have to say I agree with a lot of what you say regarding the last pre Asph version. For €500 - €600 one gets a lens so similar in fingerprint to the 75 Summilux apart from the Max aperture and the difference in focal length. It is such good value for money in this insane lens / price performance ratios. I'm enjoying mine immensely.

Despite having the 90cronAA already for years without complaints, the S'lux75 gave me the idea to try the pre-asph 90cron too. The M8 (but film also) retains the value of these lenses to the max. Interesting experience. To be honest, I find the pre-asph 90cron a bit easier to focus than the AA version.
carstenw Posted October 25, 2007 Share #7 Posted October 25, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Yes, the ASPH and Apo versions of the lenses seem to have a more abrubt change from in focus to out of focus. I wonder if that is why the older look pleases so many, rather than the softer micro-detail?
