KJB Posted October 24, 2007 Share #1 Posted October 24, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm thinking of going with the following lineup for mostly family and some event photography. WATE 24asph 35 lux asph 50 lux asph So far I have the WATE, 21asph, 50asph, and Noctilux. So I'd be trading out the 21 for a 24 and adding the 35 lux while selling the Nocti. Anyone have this setup and if so are you happy with it? Use all of them? Best, Ken

Guest guy_mancuso Posted October 24, 2007 Share #3 Posted October 24, 2007 For most event work I use the 28 and 35 although the 24mm would be handy at times. It's all about spacing , I should talk i have everything but the WATE 24,35 and 50 is a nice setup or 21, 28 50 works too. It depends on where you need the speed too, I replaced the Wate with a 21 for that extra stop, that hurt internally becuase the WATE is stellar but until Leica can come up with faster extreme wides than I will have to go with the 21mm or 24 depending on your preference. The 24 does still give you frame lines And sometimes between the three it is a matter of moving your feet a little, 21, 24, 28, 35 are all pretty close. think in terms of 21,28 or 24,
stunsworth Posted October 24, 2007 Share #4 Posted October 24, 2007 Hi Ken, I often go out with 24/35/50 and it works very well. For the kind of things I shoot they cover just about everything. My preference is for a 75 instead of the 50, but since I have a problem with my 75 Summicron I guess I'd better get used to the 50 for a while while its being repaired. Shootist Posted October 24, 2007 Share #5 Posted October 24, 2007 Although the 24 is a great lens, it has been living on my chrome M8 for the last week or so, you might think about going to a 28/2 since you have the wider side covered with the WATE ( @ 21mm). And then maybe even skip the 35 and go for a 75 Cron for those close ups from a farther distance. After saying all that your choices are good. tom0511 Posted October 24, 2007 Share #6 Posted October 24, 2007 I'm thinking of going with the following lineup for mostly family and some event photography.WATE 24asph 35 lux asph 50 lux asph So far I have the WATE, 21asph, 50asph, and Noctilux. So I'd be trading out the 21 for a 24 and adding the 35 lux while selling the Nocti. Anyone have this setup and if so are you happy with it? Use all of them? Best, Ken Actually in your case I would rather exchange the Noctilux for a 28/2.0asph and just keep that setup. I own all off them and here is my opinion: 21 vs 24: for me the 21 draws smoother regarding tones, the 24 is more contrasty and more saturated. I prefer the character of the 21 Noctilux: nice character but on the other side I just find it hard to focus at f 1.0. If I want character today I rather use the 50 Sonnar than the Noctilux. 35lux: great lens but personally I prefer either the 28, being a little wider or the 50, being a little more compressed-depending on the scene. 24 vs 28: 24 more dynamic and powerfull look, 28 more natural look, its more what I really see, 24 is more to show something a little bit more drastic than what I see. dseelig Posted October 24, 2007 Share #7 Posted October 24, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I was just down in New Orleans. I left my 25 zeiss at home and went with the wate for day shooting for low light the 28 summicron 35summilux 50 summilux and 75 summilux. It was a nice set up. The 50 got used the least but was happy to use it . The funny thing is at home waking around the 25 zeiss lives on my camera. But I am shooting nature old ming cabins not people with it. Cheers, Tom Thanks all for the comments. They are helpful. Tom, Your comments on the 24 have intrigued me enough to give it a try. My worry with the 35 lux is that it will be too narrow. The 28 cron has just about the perfect FOV on the M8 but I do so much low light shooting and since the 28 is fairly close to the 35 I'm thiinking that the speed factor tips in favor of the lux. guidomo Posted October 25, 2007 Share #9 Posted October 25, 2007 If I was left with your lenses I'd be missing a longer-than-50mm lens. I personally find 35 and 50 too close, I never carry them together. Although that means quite a bit of change to what you have, a sensible line-up could be: WATE-28/2A-50/1.4A-75/2AA or even the 90 instead of the 75. (The 75/1.4 is nice too.) carstenw Posted October 25, 2007 Share #10 Posted October 25, 2007 I think it depends on your usage whether or not you find the 35 and 50 too close. For me, they are not too close, and I often carry both. However, if I carry 50 and 75, I end up not using one of them. I would go 28/50/90 or 24/35/75. c6gowin Posted October 25, 2007 Share #11 Posted October 25, 2007 This topic is interesting to me because it is fun to hear other peoples opinion and rationalization for their lens line-up. Choosing a len(s) is ultimately a very personal decision, but it is important to get other opinions in order to make an informed decision before spending big bucks. Personally, I wish I could take Guy's approach - buy them all and live with them for a while to see what suits your needs then sell/trade to fine tune the line-up. Another thing to consider is that you will probably never be 100% completely satisfied that you have acheived lens line-up nirvana because your needs, wants, interests, etc. will most likely change some over time. I am convinced there will always be a lens out there calling your name - if it isn't there now then it will be introduced at the next trade show. Shootist Posted October 25, 2007 Share #12 Posted October 25, 2007 I took Guy's approach, basically. I have a 21, 24, 28, 35, 2-50's, 75, 90 and 135. When I go out for a walk or I'm going somewhere locally to actually do some photography I'll take about 4 or 5 of those lenses. I was in downtown Atlanta this past weekend and had the 21, 28, 35, 50 and 75 with me and I used all of them at one time or another. If I go away someplace I take all the lenses most of the time. The exception is the 135. I only take that lens if I feel I will need it.

In my case there are some lenses I allways like and use much (28 and 50), and then there are times, when I explore other lenses and like to use them for some time. Like the 50/1.5 Zeiss, or the 90 macro, or the 24 for more street-like photography. Its a process and its fun. cheers, Tom

There are some I could sell but I think selling-buying-selling you loose more money in the end.
Guest guy_mancuso Posted October 25, 2007 Share #15 Posted October 25, 2007 Well Guy's approch is expensive too but I have pretty much settled in on exactly what i want 12, 21 elmarit, 28cron, 35 version IV, 50 lux, 75 lux, 90 apo,135 apo. My question still remains CV15 and the Zeiss 18. If you notice there are many mandler style in that lineup, I just like that look. i would sell the 12,15 and 18 in a minute for a leica 14mm 3.5 if that ever came out. I even sold my Artisian bags for Domke J803 and a F803. The J model takes in all of it and the F takes some of it. Just depends on what I am doing but right now except for the extreme wides i am pretty much done. Not sure if we are ever done though
