Eikonphoto Posted October 23, 2007 Share #1 Posted October 23, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Today I changed lenses and noticed there was a 'ding' in the 3rd shutter blade. I have not done anything that would cause this damage. I only use a 75mm cv, a 35mm summicron asph, a cv 21 and a 12mm cv. The ding was not there yesterday. Obviously I will be sending this out for repair, but I wondered if this has happened to anyone else.
Advertisement Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 Hi Eikonphoto, Take a look here shutter damage. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
marknorton Posted October 23, 2007 Share #2 Posted October 23, 2007 Karen, that's bad news. I think it's happened to one or two other people here. Unfortunately, it's impossible for you to prove that the damage wasn't caused when sensor cleaning or by a lens. Is the ding in the middle of the blade or along the edge? If along the edge, it might be the blade encountered something while moving, a piece of grit or some other obstruction. I seem to remember the repair cost around $700. Mark, Is that repair quote mentioned in a thread here somewhere? I would be very upset to be charged for repairing a shutter that should be covered under the warranty. How would anyone 'prove' this. ? The ding is not in the center, it's on the left. The third blade down.
marknorton Posted October 23, 2007 Share #4 Posted October 23, 2007 Sorry, Karen, I wasn't beeing clear, I meant is it on the horizontal edge of the third blade or just in the middle of the metal? I'll try to find the previous thread...
Eikonphoto Posted October 23, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted October 23, 2007 Mark It's not a tear, more like a slight crease. What's interesting is it looks like a crease 'outwards' if you understand what I mean. I have not had any problem with my M8 (bar the occasional venetian blind) and was contemplating replacing my dslrs with another body or two. I have to say as someone who relies on camera's for my livelihood, Leica's repair policy will be part of the decision. For sure I will be holding off on that decision for a while. Eikonphoto Posted October 23, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted October 23, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Mark Here's one .... these dent's all appear to be in the top left part of the shutter. There are several people with this dent - what did Jono et al do about it? http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/27005-should-i-concerned-about-small-dent.htmlhttp://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/27005-should-i-concerned-about-small-dent.html
marknorton Posted October 23, 2007 Share #8 Posted October 23, 2007 Karen, are you sure it's physical damage and not oil or grease? If so, you might try using a Q-tip/cotton bud damp, not wet, with Eclipse cleaning fluid to remove it. Keep in mind the shutter curtains are thinner than paper, so apply the least pressure you can. Eikonphoto Posted October 23, 2007 Author Share #9 Posted October 23, 2007 Mark It does not look like gunk. I know none of my lenses came into contact with it, which is what makes it so mysterious. I would be interested to hear from anyone else who has experienced this. On the one hand I don't want to use the camera, but then I have a lot of assigments between now and the end of the year. Shootist Posted October 23, 2007 Share #10 Posted October 23, 2007 You need to SEND THE CAMERA to Leica TODAY. Not tomorrow or next week, TODAY. DO NOT use it again. One person on this forum that had shutter damage had to pay to have it fixed, the link mark posted with a V shaped notch in one of the blades. Leica did not cover it under the warranty. The only way to tell if it will be covered is to send it in and have them look at it.
andybarton Posted October 23, 2007 Share #11 Posted October 23, 2007 Doesn't the Passport cover accidental damage too? (I am not saying the damage, if it is damage, was accidental, or deliberate, but the Passport is a pretty comprehensive warranty)

stunsworth Posted October 23, 2007 Share #13 Posted October 23, 2007 Andy, there's no passport warranty in North America as far as I'm aware. In Europe there's 12 month cover, and since it applies to any kind of damage this would be covered.

Guest guy_mancuso Posted October 23, 2007 Share #16 Posted October 23, 2007 Karen i would call Robert Fisk today at leica NJ and see what they think . I would take the battery out right now so it could not fire and start packing it.
Eikonphoto Posted October 23, 2007 Author Share #17 Posted October 23, 2007 Can someone explain, if we don't have a 'passport' warranty over in the US - what type of warranty do we have?
stunsworth Posted October 23, 2007 Share #18 Posted October 23, 2007 You'll have a warranty that covers mechanical and electrical failure, but excludes accidental damage.
robsteve Posted October 23, 2007 Share #19 Posted October 23, 2007 Mark I have to say as someone who relies on camera's for my livelihood, Leica's repair policy will be part of the decision. . Karen: Since you are a professional, you should look into the Leica professional services. You may want to call your Leica representative, or Leica NJ to see what is required to get into the program. They may just be able to loan you a M8 while yours is being serviced.
fotografr Posted October 23, 2007 Share #20 Posted October 23, 2007 I'll be very surprised if this is not covered by the Leica warranty. Please keep us informed. I know of one case back in February or March where a shutter developed a V notch and the camera was immediately replaced.
