Dan States Posted October 23, 2007 Share #1 Posted October 23, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) For some unknown reason these past few days I've been thinking about Sal Dimarco, the PJ who used to grace the orignal Leica Forum in it's several incarnations. Sal, for those of you who were not around at the time, was our original "Guy"...A generous pro who was constantly helping others on the old forums, adding wit and insight and the perspective of a real old time pro PJ. Sal died suddenly back in 2004. It's too bad that he missed the digital Leica M world. I know he would have been right in the thick of this new rangefinder revival. Sal was one of the folks who set the cast for this forum...as a place where you can generally expect cordial behavior and good humor. I guess it says something that years after the death of a person who I only knew through correspondence I still think of the man. Let's hope we gather many more like him! Best wishes Dan

howard_cummer Posted October 23, 2007 Share #2 Posted October 23, 2007 I was in Philadelphia for a conference about 2002 and posted an email on the LUG about meeting Leica users. Sal responded and I spent a delightful three hours listening to his war stories about photographing for Time and in the White House. He gave me a set of White House Photographer baggage tags which I still have. He was a great story teller, a fun loving man, and a real gentleman. thrid Posted October 23, 2007 Share #3 Posted October 23, 2007 That's odd. I was thinking about Sal just last week. For no particular reason his memory seems to surface from time to time. I never met him in person, but he always was so pleasant and helpful. It's such a shame he went to early in life.
Guest tummydoc Posted October 23, 2007 Share #4 Posted October 23, 2007 Indeed. I took every opportunity to try to persuade Sal to lose weight and take better care of himself but failed to convince him in time.
Dan States Posted October 24, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted October 24, 2007 That's odd. I was thinking about Sal just last week. For no particular reasonhis memory seems to surface from time to time. I never met him in person, but he always was so pleasant and helpful. It's such a shame he went to early in life. I think of Sal on occasions when the phrase "Happy Snaps" comes up. These days it seems to be used as a derogatory comment on snap shooters, but Sal used it to sign off his emails. It was a good reminder that photography is mostly for fun and profit, and should be enjoyed as such!
