Thanks for the link, I’ll give it a go. I confess I’d been trying to avoid US shipping costs but it looks like I’ll just have to bite the bullet!

 B+W makes similar filters. 092 and 093.

Which should be available in Europe?

Thank you. I have the B+W 093 but didn’t go for the 092 because it’s only 695nm and I have a 720nm filter already and was looking for something in between 830nm and 720nm. I’ve now ordered a 780nm filter from the US ($40 shipping charge) so just waiting to see if UK customs add on some ludicrous import charge!

I hope the Kolari filter works out for you. The construction and coatings are about the best of any filters I've found (assuming you went for the Gen 3 Pro version). They also make really good ND filters. I use these for my main line of work and have tested extensively between brands. The Kolari ND filters proved the best in side by side tests, so I own quite a few in various densities and sizes.

  • 1 year later...

I thought it was worth revisiting this topic after another 18 months using the M11. I have developed a good formula for handheld 720 IR photography with the M11 and wanted to share a few pictures.

In a nutshell, I'm setting the ISO to 200, which takes advantage of the slight SNR/DR bump present at 200. I'm setting the shutter to 1/45th, which is about the slowest I can hand hold for truly sharp results with a 35mm lens. I am using a fast lens (in these examples, the Voigtlander 35 f/1.5 ASPH) and shooting wide open. The Voigtlander 21 f/1.4 is also an incredible lens in IR and even easier to handhold with a 720 IR filter. Same for the Laowa 15mm f/2.

Wide open landscapes aren't for everyone or every application, but they can work occasionally in the proper context. Especially with a wide lens. You do need good light...occasionally there is enough light to stop down to F2 or F2.8, but that requires great light and subject matter with high IR reflectivity. Essentially, you're underexposing by 2-3 stops in most situations, but things still hold up really well at ISO 200. Denoise in Lr works wonders if you need to push the exposure a bit more. Following are a few examples.

Voigtlander 35 1.5 ASPH @f1.5, 1/45sec, Kolari 720 IR Filter.
