atufte Posted October 23, 2007 Share #21 Posted October 23, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I ordered a 18mm Zeiss also. Need to try it more. LOL Good excuse as any i can come up with:D I did order a 58 to 55 step down for the Leica filter just need to code it for the WATE is my plan. Did just the same, + ordered a 28/90 flange/mount from Zeiss, and sending it to JM for milling, looking forward to testing with 55 Leica UV/IR and 6 Bit... :-) But so far so good.... :-)

Paul_S Posted October 23, 2007 Share #24 Posted October 23, 2007 Got my Distagon 18/4 + Biogon 35/2 + Planar 50/2 all in chrome, still waiting for the 25/2.8.. Congrats Alexander, I had not seen a chrome version yet. You might have read the confusion/debate re. the frame lines the 18mm ZM triggers on the M8. Maybe you want to give us your version of the story? Enjoy your new toys and post some pics when you are up to it. (ohh, you already did, thanks)
Guest guy_mancuso Posted October 23, 2007 Share #25 Posted October 23, 2007 I am really wondering about switching mounts . Now please correct me if i am wrong. The framelines are a mechnical operation and only have to do with frame lines. why change the frame lines when you use a extrenal finder. If i code the lens for the WATE than that is a electronic read and really one should have no bearing on the other i would think. Let's say i don't care about the framelines and just leave the mount alone and just code it , it should work in my thinking. Yes , No .
Paul_S Posted October 23, 2007 Share #26 Posted October 23, 2007 Let's say i don't care about the framelines and just leave the mount alone and just code it , it should work in my thinking. Yes , No . I learned from different posts here that at least for WATE like detection, the CODE and the FLANGE/MOUNT must compare to the original. When ordering a John Milich adapter for a CV15 for example one has to order the right version (28/90) to be detected as WATE after coding. I good be wrong as well. You wont be able to code it as a WATE without the 28/90 mount, i'm sorry but we have to change mount/flange if we want to code as WATE, which of course we do :-) (This because the camera needs to "see" the 28/90 for the 6-Bit WATE code)
Guest guy_mancuso Posted October 23, 2007 Share #28 Posted October 23, 2007 That is what i am trying to figure out Paul do you really need the other mount. I tried this lens with a B+W with no coding in Yosemite and i did get cyan corners a little but it was not coded. When i get it i will just run a marker for the WATE and see if it comes up in the menu. Than send it to John for milled coding . Guess now i am the guinea pig. Geez i never get away from this stuff. MJones Posted October 23, 2007 Share #31 Posted October 23, 2007 From this guy: hoenlinger@zeiss.de That email is correct. I just ordered mine directly through Zeiss Germany yesterday. Here are the part numbers Bertram Hoenlinger provided me for the mount swaps: For the Zeiss 18/4 it will need to pull up the 28/90 on the M8 to match the coding for the Leica WATE. Zeiss also rec'd an extra set of screws for each mount. (Also, of you are interested in mounts for Ziess 21/2.8 it will also need this same mount) #1469-516 mounts for 28mm ZM lens: (to show the 28+90mm framelines on M8)- 26EUR #1460-876 screw sets (4 screws per set)0,50 EUR Here's the mount needed for the Zeiss 25: #1460-875 mount for 35mm ZM lens: (to show the 24+35mm framelines on M8)- 26 EUR We'll see how long it takes to get them in the US. I'm guessing it may take a while.
Guest guy_mancuso Posted October 23, 2007 Share #32 Posted October 23, 2007 Honestly guys from my little use of the lens the other day with very little cyan corners this is without a filter but IR on in the menu Welcome, dear visitor! Guest guy_mancuso Posted October 23, 2007 Share #33 Posted October 23, 2007 Now watch this. the first one is the Zeiss 18mm without a filter with IR on in the menu. Now i did get some cyan because the sensor has some IR cut on it . The second image is a leica 21mm asph with IR filter on Leica brand and menu option on and it cleans it up nicely. Now my thinking is if i just put the leica IR on with the menu option on we may get lucky. i am going to try this immediately when I get the lens to see if it truly cleans up Zeiss 18 no filter Leica 21 with filter . I moved the camera back for this shot and went a touch to far. BTW they both rock with sharpness and there is no way i am selling the 21 for the 18. Right now i have a 12 , 15 CV, Zeiss 18 and leica 21mm. i am truly a lenswhore. Obviously we need to test it more and maybe Sean has tried this. basically just stick the IR filter on and see what happens. i have a feeling the leica is defaulting to 18mm when it can't see the lens Welcome, dear visitor! sean_reid Posted October 23, 2007 Share #34 Posted October 23, 2007 Hi Guy, I hope you're having fun at the workshop. The M8 uses both the 6-bit code and the frame lines position to trigger its corrections. So, to get the WATE 18 mm correction, the Zeiss needs to have a 28/90 bayonet. Some subjects might mask the cyan drift (and one can always use Cornerfix) but you'll see it with others. Best, Sean
atufte Posted October 23, 2007 Share #35 Posted October 23, 2007 Ok, Guy, here's a test with your suggestion, i was really hoping you were right but i'm sorry to say, the cyan corners are very evident with both lens detection on or off+Uv/ir...(without coding) Not completly fair since i only had a 52mm B+W Uv/ir filter at hand wich probably vignettes aswell, but even with a "fullsize" filter the cyan will still be there... First one without filter, no detiction on, the second is B+W uv/ir+ detection + uv/ir... (And no, the lens is not this vignetty, it's the light over our ceramic hob, ventilation that causes this...) Guest guy_mancuso Posted October 23, 2007 Share #36 Posted October 23, 2007 Thanks Alex always worth a test at least. I will see if i can get a mount
charlesphoto99 Posted October 23, 2007 Share #37 Posted October 23, 2007 What if you were to just tape the frame selector switch to 28/90? (at least for the meantime)
Guest guy_mancuso Posted October 24, 2007 Share #38 Posted October 24, 2007 Or just push it when the lens is on. I'm waiting for mine to come in and i will figure something out. In the mean time i did send a e-mail and will contact Tony. Maybe go buy a lens that the framelines works and switch it. a thought
ken_tanaka Posted October 24, 2007 Share #39 Posted October 24, 2007 I could not find the Zeiss 18mm f/4 listed at any of my normal photo haunt sites. So I ordered it directly from Zeiss' online shop (https://photo-shop.zeiss.com/epages/cz.d/?ObjectID=640324&Locale=en_GB). I've used it before and, while there are no bargains to be had, they actually process orders quite quickly. Of course the shipping can be painful but the whole M8 experience demands financial fortitude, doesn't it. No time to quibble over petty larceny. I also ordered a B+W 58mm 486 slim filter from Adorama. While I don't think the 18mm would vignette with a standard thickness filter on the M8's 1.3 crop sensor I also didn't think the extra $34 for a slim filter was an excessive insurance premium. Again, why waste time quibbling over pin pricks while you're watching an arterial squirt. Ah, but what about a finder? I personally hate these damn ancient external finders. But shooting with an 18mm without one could be dicey. I figure that the effective frame size of the 18mm on the M8 will be just under 24mm. I already have a 21mm Voigtlander finder which is not accurate for my 21mm lens on the M8 but will get me close enough with the 18mm. So I'll make do. dseelig Posted October 24, 2007 Share #40 Posted October 24, 2007 Okay how does it feel on the m8 compared to the wate much lighter??? Or no appreciable difference? David
