FastFashnReloaded Posted October 18, 2007 Share #43 Posted October 18, 2007 Dana, I think you and I probably have similar politics, and as I (hopefully) conveyed in an earlier post, I also am greatly concerned about our trending inequality. I am not a gated community suburbanite --- I live in downtown Minneapolis. And although I admittedly live in an expensive condo, I have a homeless shelter three blocks away, street people living under the freeway overpass right across from my building, get panhandled nearly every time I walk the streets of my 'hood, etc. So I'm all too aware of the problems. Nevertheless, I'm of the opinion that neither the problems nor the solutions are easy to identify or implement. And I also think that to some degree, Americans have made their own bed (not talking about you or your family here). Why does the average family need 2500 square feet of home? Why is having a large screen flat panel tele the norm? Why does an average family need 3 autos? And why does every person need to carry Louis Vuitton, drive expensive cars (on lease), etc. and so on? Clearly, this is good for the powers that be, but at some point the American consumer needs to take responsibility for his/her level of indebtedness. The norm of consumption in our society has been radically redefined in just a generation. Jeff. I know the mistakes I've made... And having RCA, Delco and AT&T and Pinnacle Systems fold up and die on me didn't help. I would have loved to have been able to work at one place for forty years... Ah well. It's grumpy old man Thursday! Thanks for the conversation, and the good posts. Maybe more people are beginning to think about the future now. -Dana "I come to you now at the turn of the tide..." - Gandalf

Personally I find warfare barbaric, American culture crass (for the most part), and technology overly pervasive. But I think it can hardly be argued that the USA is in a dominant position in all spheres. I know you Kiwis are pretty isolated down in the South Pacific, but are you lucky enough to have avoided US movies/tele, Coca Cola, McDonalds, Starbucks, iPods, computers, Budweiser, etc.? I know you certainly haven't avoided the US military, as our two nations have had lots of conflict over the years over port access for the US Navy (conflicts with anti-nuclear laws in NZ). You also have had (still do?) troops deployed to Afghanistan. But I give NZ it's due for cultural influence on us Yanks too. I routinely drink Steinlager, love the All Blacks haka, and think that the Flight of the Conchords is pretty damn funny. Take care, Jeff.

bradreiman Posted October 18, 2007 Share #46 Posted October 18, 2007 "US movies/tele, Coca Cola, McDonalds, Starbucks, iPods, computers, Budweiser, etc.? " ok- i didn't know you meant american culture. thought you meant culture like, art, music, dance, food etc. One of the mainstays of Kiwi culture is the Kiwi bach or beach house. It involves being with family and friends and playing games and barbecueing and laughing and carrying on. Not much of an export but I'll take that over ipods any day. Kiwis in Afghanistan not as part of some coalition of the coerced but as concerned world citizens that see afghanistan as the real problem (and pakistan obviously). Technologically-almost every tech company in the states is staffed by immigrants to design product to be built over in Asia. Oh and I'm american and love the country of my roots. Now-back on topic. I just bought my second m8 body for about 4400 usd here in auckland. Luckily the nz dollar is still pretty weak....B
Daniel Ortego Posted October 19, 2007 Share #47 Posted October 19, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) It's already at $5495....what's the shock here? At this level, an extra $500 above the $4995 price probably presented few roadblocks for buyers. You guys really think recent college grads are buying this stuff new? It's either pro's that can afford & justify it or amatuers that have the means & desire to do so. This is likely the most accurate and reasonable perspective I've read so far. Still, I’m waiting to hear from my supplier who is attending some big photo show in NYC today. No speculation here, just curious to learn if anything is new.
