robsteve Posted October 17, 2007 Share #22 Â Posted October 17, 2007 This one, together with your black cat and kids shots are some of the fantastic DMR samples on the web that got me into the setup, Rob. I will never get tired of seeing them again. Â Thanks Simon. That was back in the days of the DMR bible on the Fred Miranda site. Â I get the feeling that all of a sudden we have gotten some new converts to the DMR.

andybarton Posted October 17, 2007 Share #24 Â Posted October 17, 2007 I get the feeling that all of a sudden we have gotten some new converts to the DMR. Â Me too, Rob. Â Maybe we need a "My little DMR" thread in the Photo section
Jamie Roberts Posted October 17, 2007 Share #25  Posted October 17, 2007 LOL Andy--I was wondering how long we could do this  Anyway, I just want to say that I love threads like this that collect images I probably missed in the photo forum (though I am endeavouring to spend more time there!).  Thanks to everyone for sharing these wonderful images!  On a technical note (it's a technical thread!) Can I ask what people are using for focussing screens if they're different from the stock DMR screen?  I use the Brightscreen screen and eyepeice magnifier, but I still have trouble from time to time wide open with the luxes and that screen and would love to make a switch to something a bit more reliable (or maybe it's my eyes!).  Heck, I bet I'm the only one with a little backfocus problem on the DMR and no problem at all on the M8
echorec Posted October 17, 2007 Author Share #26  Posted October 17, 2007 Thanks everyone for sharing these wonderful pictures!  I love the 3D look of the DMR pics. I also love the colours, not exaggerated or saturated like in most of the other digital cams out there, just natural.  Keep ´em coming guys!

Jamie Roberts Posted October 17, 2007 Share #28 Â Posted October 17, 2007 I use the standard issue DMR focusing screen and no magnifier. To be honest, I don't even know what backfocus is... Â Cheers, Â Yeah--it's probably just my eyes. Alas But maybe I'll play around with the original screen and see. It's really only when I'm pushing the 50 or 80 lux that I have a problem. All the others seem ok.
echorec Posted October 17, 2007 Author Share #29 Â Posted October 17, 2007 Ok, a technincal question: Â Are all the R8 and R9 bodies compatible with the DMR or should I look for certain versions or models above certain serial numbers? Â Thanks, Â Gunnar
andybarton Posted October 17, 2007 Share #30 Â Posted October 17, 2007 Some early R8s need to have a firmware flash done in Solms to make them compatible. Unfortunately, there seems to be only one way to find out whether your particular example is one of them... Â All R9s are fine.

I use the Brightscreen screen and eyepeice magnifier, but I still have trouble from time to time wide open with the luxes and that screen and would love to make a switch to something a bit more reliable (or maybe it's my eyes!).  Jamie,  I've tried the stock screen, microprism screen, Brightscreen, and the groundglass screen. I found that I backfocus with the luxes (wide open) if I use the microprism or split screen portions of the screen. However, if I used the groundglass portion of the same screen, I was able to focus accurately with the luxes. So, I just use the plain groundglass screen. It's definitely less bright than other focusing screens, but I live with it. The microprism and split screen aren't great with my long lenses anyway. That is what I use and when Guy saw mine when we were in Mexico, he went right to the B&H site and ordered one. It is part 14394. robsteve Posted October 17, 2007 Share #33  Posted October 17, 2007 Some early R8s need to have a firmware flash done in Solms to make them compatible. Unfortunately, there seems to be only one way to find out whether your particular example is one of them...  All R9s are fine.  I had a really early R8 and it worked fine with the DMR. I can't remember the serial number, but it wasn't far off the serial number of the R8 in the original R8 sales literature.  Robert
andybarton Posted October 17, 2007 Share #34 Â Posted October 17, 2007 Mine is a 98/99 R8 and when it went back to Solms to be fixed due to an unfortunate Manfrotto incident, they also brought it up to spec as far as DMRs are concerned. Â YMMV, as they say. Somewhere.

Likaleica Posted October 18, 2007 Share #37  Posted October 18, 2007 Gunnar,  I'm a DMR newbie, just got it late last week. If you are trying to decide anything about image quality, here is a frame I took today and a crop. I believe the cropped image could stand alone in print, although I haven't seen how big yet. I am absolutely amazed by this camera and would encourage you to get one. You'll never look back.   Welcome, dear visitor! Jamie Roberts Posted October 18, 2007 Share #39  Posted October 18, 2007 I didn't know we were posting self portraits here too  LOL!! Hey Robert, I hope I look as good as this guy does when I'm his age (87)  Thanks for the link to the screen; I ordered it and we'll see if that fixes my problem or not
echorec Posted October 18, 2007 Author Share #40 Â Posted October 18, 2007 Another question then: Â How about the colours? Do you need to do a lot of post processing to make them as beautiful as you have shown here or do they look good right out the box? Â How about JPG quality and AWB? Â Thanks again, Â Gunnar
