toddbee Posted October 16, 2007 Share #1 Posted October 16, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am close to purchasing a M8, but would love to see if i can get a good low iso sample that i can possibly print in my normal work flow. I shoot a 5d now and usually print 17x22 at the largest. i am wondering how they compare at this size to my 5d. Does anyone have a sample pic they can possible direct me to at full resolution? Also is the magenta problem fixed? Any reason to wait for an updated version of the m8? i have not been following, but was wondering if they have something up there sleeve? thanks, todd tbochner@yahoo.com

If you send me your email address, I can email you several examples. You should have no problem printing pix of the size you need. The magenta problem is caused by a weak IR filter in front of the image chip, necessary to allow the fantastic resolution from wide angle lenses with a minimum of crop factor. A thick IR filter at this location would apparently compromise this. The solution, with no known in sight that I am aware of, is to place an IR-cut filter on every lens. This will render black synthetics their true color. Lenses wider than 35mm with these filters attached cause a cyan (blue) coloring to the corners of the image frame, and must be compensated for by software which places a color complement (Magenta) in the same distribution as the "cyan drift". When this solution was first anounced, everyone was up in arms having to use a filter, now the problem seems to have died down. I would not wait for an updated M8 or M8MkII or M9. Leica, as a company, has the most inertia to be the LAST on any bandwagon of technology. Their first SLR was 10 years after others, and was without a light meter. Leica has always been behind the times in photography, depending on (IMHO) the fanatical customer base that thinks they can do no wrong, and that no one else can even come close. I suspect you will be waiting a long time for an update. I would say buy now, as a price increase is more likely than an updated camera. Again, send me your email address and I will email you some of my amateur pix- I am at cme4brain@aol.com. -Lloyd
fotografr Posted October 16, 2007 Share #3 Posted October 16, 2007 This isn't full resolution, but it is an available light portrait I shot recently with the M8 and 50 lux ASPH. The magenta issue you refer to is dealt with by using a UV/IR cut filter on the lenses. In my opinion, this solution is completely satisfactory. The filter protects the front elements while completely eliminating the IR problem. I also own a couple of 5Ds and since getting the M8 I use them only when I absolutely have to (e.g. when I need long lenses or fast zooms). The M8 has pretty much become my tool of choice. M8 files will print beautifully at the size you mentioned. Welcome, dear visitor! Shootist Posted October 17, 2007 Share #16 Posted October 17, 2007 These are some great shots. No wonder I love this camera! Thanks, Me To. I find it really hard to use my Nikon D200. The images from that camera are just hard to look at after seeing images from the M8.
