Removing or installing flange Zeiss 35 ZM?

Can anyone tell me if there are any issues I should be aware of to remove the flange from a Zeiss 35 Biogon ZM to send it to John Milich for coding? And perhaps more importantly- resinstalling it? Any critical measurements, alignment and such I'd be messing up?

It looks like there are just four screws holding it on but is it really that simple?

(I'm trying to get everything ready in anticipation of the arrival of my M8 body. Ironically I got my WATE and Zeiss 35 ZM in less than a week but my M8 is backordered. I already ordered my WATE adapter from John M)

Sorry if this has been discussed before but couldn't find any info on removal/install of Zeiss ZM lens flanges.

Thanks,

Joel

Hi,

The good news about Zeiss ZM flanges is, you don't need a special screwdriver. :cool:

The only "problem" you could have is, a very very thin washer could be placed between the lens barrel and the flange.

If there is such a piece, don't bend it, don't brake it and keep it clean. ;)

Hey Joel, no problem in taking off-putting it on again here. I would suggest, get a spare part from Zeiss, send the spare to Milich for coding, keep the original untouched - good for sale purpose, for instance, and just to have the original part there in case you need it. As well, this would reduce the time your lens stays without a mount to just a few minutes, reducing the risk to mess with the mechanisms inside, get dirt and dust in, and such.

Good luck, and enjoy your M8 when it gets there! :D

Thank you Vieri- I like the idea of getting a spare flange to send off to John M.

Anyone know where to get one- preferably in the U.S.?

I didn't have any luck on the Zeiss web site. They didn't seem to have a United States repair or parts facility listed. Any help here appreciated.

Send email to:

"Hoenlinger, Bertram" <hoenlinger@zeiss.de>

He responds quickly. My ZM28 flange cost Eur 26 plus shipping.

Good point.

I read on other thread that you would get another mounh anyway to bring up the correct frame line. For example, 28mm mount for the 21mm Zeiss lens due to the 1.3x factor. Althought 45mm for the 35mm lens in this case may not apply in this case.

Does it make sense?

I am always confused on this kind of stuff.

Zeiss mounts goes as:

Zeiss 25mm = mount of the Zeiss 35mm (brings up 24/35mm lines, matters both for framing & for coding);

Zeiss 21mm = mount of the Zeiss 28mm (doesn't matter for framing, because there isn't 21mm framelines anyway, matters for coding if you want to code it as a Leica 21mm);

Zeiss 35mm = works fine as it is, but you need to code it of course;

Zeiss 50mm = works fine as it is, both in the f2 and the f1.5 flavours but you need to code them;

Zeiss 85mm = I am not sure, but should work fine as a 90mm;

Zeiss 15mm = I am not sure, but I think you have to replace the mount for coding it as a wate;

Zeiss 18mm = I am not sure;

Hope this helps,

I had Don Goldberg change my mounts . He can also check for focus problems. We spend so much on a lens do not cheap out and take a chance, I had a screw brake on me of my zeiss lenses it took 110 bucks to get it out. Goldberg with shipping charged me around 50 bucks to change the mount.

I changed the mount on my 21/2.8, for coding. It needed an infinity adjustment when the replacement mount had been installed. Some people are having this issue, some are not.

You may have a local repair person qualified to do this in your area. I found one in my town (Portland, OR) which is not a "big" city by most standards.

Thanks to all for your input. Many great ideas and info. I will seek to buy an extra flange for Milich coding and probably have Goldberg or someone comparable install it for me. I have other stuff to send him anyway.

BTW, Tom you have some awesome images on your site. Many of your fine art works remind me of Ernst Haas- one of my all time favorite photographers.

Appreciate everyones input!

Its really "that simple". But Zeiss does put some "lock-tite" on the screw threads to ensure the screws stay tight and don't unloosen. It takes a bit of torque to unscrew each of the four screws. After removing the screws you'll notice a white film on the screw threads that can be removed by dipping th screw into alcohol.

The screws are really small, so don't drop them on the floor, you'll never find them...

Cheers Rob :)

Thanks Joel! High praise indeed. Haas is also one of my life-long influences, and his work is one of the reasons I got serious about photography as a young man.

Good luck with the lens conversion. It should go very smoothly. The Zeiss ZMs are very nice across the board.
