It's kinda sad. It was a great little lens, and eventually I only switched to the 35 Lux Asph because I shoot with this focal length so often, and missed the extra stop. Then Eoin's chrome copy with no focus shift came on the market, and I just couldn't resist.

Yeah, Yeah, don't rub it in :)

I DO like chrome lenses, my biggest regret is missing a mint 24 elmarit on UK ebay for £750 a few months ago. Still, Wilson's lovely Nocti is doing me proud, so I shouldn't complain!

Yea maybe i will do that . Jono still looking for that 24mm, I will keep my eyes out for you , maybe even mine. I may go to the 21 asph instead. Still testing all this ultra wide stuff out

Hi Guy

you have a chrome one?

what you REALLY need for your stuff is a MINT condition 21mm pre-asph from around 1990 6 bit coded made in Canada and restored by Solms -- soft and beautiful . . . . I know a man who'd swap it for one of those clinical modern 24's!

Can anyone specifically tell me the difference between a version III vs a version IV and is it optically the same or different. Also do i want Canadian or German. I have beat on a 3rd version for 1100 and may jump on it. Be honest if it stinks i want to know, not in a hurry I can wait for a 4th

Hi Guy,

Why did you decide to switch 35s?

Cheers,

Sean

Yea with this light Sean it is just a little to heavy. Arizona is just nasty bright.

See what the 35 asph does at F2 . i mean it works great and is sharp as a tack but a little harsh for me

Just a quicky from the other day

For lower contrast but high resolving lenses that would be used stopped down between f/8 and f/16 (sunny day hyperfocal snapshot mode). What are the opinions of the following 35mm lenses:

Leica 35/2.8 Summaron

CV 35/1.7 Ultron

Leica 35/2 Summicron IV

Canon 2.6 / 2 / 1.8 ?

Stopped down to f/11-16 a lens from 1955 is going to resolve about the same as one from 2005. In the case of the older Leica lenses like the Summaron they might even have an edge at close distances.

So compact size, nice tonality and moderate contrast. When you leave out the apertures brighter then say f/4 it really changes the equation. Any favorites?

Hi Hank,

For that specific purpose, I'd recommend the CV 35/2.5 Skopar.

Cheers,

Sean

Well the size (and price) would be perfect but wouldn't that lens be more contrasty then the CV Ultron and some of the older glass? I've just acquired a 35 Summilux ASPH and if I can't pick up a stop in range over the 35 Summilux ASPH at f/16 I'd just leave the Lux on and stick to one lens.

Stopped down it will be less contrasty than the Lux. It's true that the Ultron is a lower contrast lens but I'd suggest at least trying the Skopar to see what you think. It surprises a lot of people.

Had a Version III in the 70's and loved it. Moved to the IV in the 80's and did not like it nearly as well. I really like the 35 Asph so much better than the IV. For me bokeh is less important than thesharpness and contrast of what is in focus.

The thing is and part of my reasoning is when i need sharp , i really have it in spades but i don't have a lot of look lenses , I do the 28 cron is a monster in my book and tested against the 24mm elmarit it compares extremely well so i have that on one side and the 50 lux on the other so in that area it is well covered with sharp as a tack lenses. don't use the 35 much so i want a lens that is a little lower contrast and has nice bokeh and i think the bonus on this lens from what I have seen is B+W. My other feeling is this and i am the wrost at this . I did this with the DMR also i bought the 80 lux 3 times and the 90 apo twice. i tend to flop around a lot and try almost every lens out there. i think my hobby part is buying lenses and the work part is actually using them. LOL

I really do like trying lenses out and see what they do or can't do. If it don't work out you will see it here for sale . LOL

I need a little lower contrast than the new cron and looking for better bokeh. Worth a try . Jack has one i can try tomorrow

Yee-haw! Exactly why I've stuck with the Mandler lenses (canadian designs 1960-80, which include all the 35 'crons except maybe the first, and the ASPH) wherever I could with the M8. Denver has the same big-blue-bowl-of-sky contrast as Phoenix.

What a difference 6 years, and a revived Leica, make. My v.4 35 cron was only $650 US in 2001 - And while I'm rubbing it in, Guy - how 'bout them Rockies! snrk-snrk-snrk!
