8877molly Posted October 13, 2007 Share #1 Posted October 13, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Wow, what a great source of info. I can't say that I grasp everything everyone says, but I'm anxious to learn. My problem---I have a new m8 and Summilux 35mm f1.4 lens. So far so good except---when I take a picture at infinity (DNG) and use the "play" function to view-------if I zoom in on the objects past 20 feet or so are out of focus. I know that the distance to infinity is approx.35 feet--I am well past that distance. Any suggestions?

Guest tummydoc Posted October 13, 2007 Share #2 Posted October 13, 2007 I know that the distance to infinity is approx.35 feet LOL.
AGeoJO Posted October 13, 2007 Share #3 Posted October 13, 2007 Jay, Do you have the ASPH version of this lens? This lens is reported to have focus shift issues. There was a recent thread regarding this here. You can do the search and read the thread to get more info. I have this lens and to be frank, I didn't notice any focus shift issues or maybe I am not looking hard enough . What aperture are you using, BTW? In addition, I don't know about the accuracy of the LCD panel; have you use your computer monitor to evaluate this?
luigi bertolotti Posted October 13, 2007 Share #4 Posted October 13, 2007 Uhm.. out of focus, you say ? Just to be sure... do you mean your lens DOES NOT FOCUS at infinty ? (best test in my op. : some really big advertising panel with letters, from100 feet about, and at least 1/125 or 1/250 if you don't like tripod) What lens is it ? A new Summilux asph 35 ? Or an old one ? And did it occurred at wide open or also at "normal" stops (5,6 - 8...) ? And, just to complete the environment... you speak of viewing the image on LCD screen... is it so also when you look at the DNG developed in C1 or LR ? 8877molly Posted October 13, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted October 13, 2007 I may have misled----the picture seems to be in focus when I look thru the viewfinder---but when I review the shot in "play" mode and then zoom in, the images greater than 20 feet away, or so, are out of focus. M6J Posted October 13, 2007 Share #8 Posted October 13, 2007 Jay, if you focus at infinity, you shoot at f/8 and all distanced objects are not sharp, then you have a problem, a big one. Just curious, when you say you focus at infinity you mean that you have moved the focus ring all the way to its infinity end, don't you?
luigi bertolotti Posted October 13, 2007 Share #9 Posted October 13, 2007 Sorry to inist, Jay, but how are the pics when seen on a PC screen ? If you haven't yet installed a DNG developer, try with JPG fine and then look at it with any Software you have... you could be so lucky is a problem of the LCD screen... Jay, The image you see in the viewfinder is not indicative of the actual picture recorded on the SD card as seen by the lens and it is always sharp, virtually from the tip of your nose to infinity. You can judge the DOF using a (D)SLR since you see through the lens but not with the M8 or any rangefinder camera. At what distansce did you focus the lens (using the focusing patch) when you get images at 20 feet and beyond being out of focus? And at what aperture? carstenw Posted October 14, 2007 Share #11 Posted October 14, 2007 If you turn the focus to infinity, and objects several kilometres or miles away are soft, then the rangefinder needs some tuning. Does it focus accurately up close? How does it act with your longest fastest lens (do you have access to anything apart from the 35?)
lars_bergquist Posted October 14, 2007 Share #12 Posted October 14, 2007 'Infinity' for a 35mm lens is 35 meters (c. 140 feet). First check focus at a distance somewhat larger than this. Do this lens wide open. If this is OK, check at one meter. You should have good focus at f:1.4 but may experience a slight focus shift when stopping down two or three f-stops. Do use a tripod! What this focus shift means to you depends of course on your shooting habits. Much of the griping has come (now I am sticking my neck out, cut here - - - - -) from people who have blamed the lens for their sloppy focusing. carstenw Posted October 14, 2007 Share #13 Posted October 14, 2007 I am not sure where you found that infinity for a 35mm lens is 35m. With my M8 and 35 Summicron ASPH, I was testing the accuracy of the infinity focus, and I could see a significant difference in sharpness if I focused at something perhaps 2km away, and something 5km away. I think the old rules of thumb are irrelevant this day and age, because we can test in a few seconds ourselves what the result of a slight misfocus is on our images.
