ROCKMT Posted October 11, 2007 Share #1 Posted October 11, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I recently slipped and fell in Vienna with my M-8 in my right hand. The back of the camera took the full force of the fall as put my hands forward to break the impact as I hit the pavement. It prevented injury to my hand. Other than loosening the wheel and a scratch on the picture viewer, the camera was fine and continued to operate for the balance of the trip. Remarkable! This is a incredibly well build case. I have now sent it to Leica for repair.

usccharles Posted October 11, 2007 Share #2 Posted October 11, 2007 i fell face first (passed out, don't ask why) with my M8 and 50 lux wrapped around my neck. when i came to, i had a huge gash on my chin from hitting the pavement which needed 10 stitches, the top of my M8 was showing gold brass, and my 50 lux hood (which thankfully was the kind that locks in place extended! unlike nocti!) was bent in. but the glass and everything with the lens was perfectly fine. my M8 had absolutely no problems, except the focus went off by about 1cm with the 50 lux. i haven't sent it back in the shop for it because in return for taking the 50lux focus off 1cm, now it its absolutely dead on with my nocti go figure. M8 is tough
marknorton Posted October 11, 2007 Share #3 Posted October 11, 2007 There's no doubt the first scratch is the worst but both you guys seem to taking breaking in your M8 to extremes...

wparsonsgisnet Posted October 11, 2007 Share #5 Posted October 11, 2007 the real problem here is that I at least have been counting on being able to heal and have taken the brunt of a couple a falls, doing things to protect the camera. As I get older, this begins to seem really dumb.

larry Posted October 11, 2007 Share #9 Posted October 11, 2007 A few weeks ago while photographing a waterfall in the Lake Superior region, I slipped on a rock and was headed down with my M8 in a vulnerable position. So I twisted around and sacrificed myself to save the camera, resulting in a few bruises and a badly twisted knee. This raises some profound questions: Why has the M8 altered my natural instincts to such a self-destructive state? Is my body worth less than an M8 body? If I had been permanently disabled or died as a result of the fall, would Leica reclaim the camera and sell it as new? Larry

GoodmanS Posted October 11, 2007 Share #11 Posted October 11, 2007 I believe that many of us have been in a tight position. I was shooting with a d100 in icy caves, slipped, fell 10 feet, landed on my knees clutching the camera, and decided I would never do that again. Fortunately nothing was broken, but I do wonder, would I repeat that foolishness for the m8??
Jack MacDonough Posted October 11, 2007 Share #12 Posted October 11, 2007 So, the new thread is how hard you can bash your M8 and still have it work? Or how much bashing you will put your body through to "protect" the unbreakable M8? Last December I fell off a ledge and in the fall on to my back I whipped the M8 that I was carrying by the long strap into rock. The camera was in a Bee case. There was a scratch on the case, but other than the range finder needing adjustment, all else worked fine. I'd say the whipping motion would have put 15Gs on the camera at impact. My fall was so unexpected that I didn't have time to think to protect the camera, but I won't bother in the future.
bradreiman Posted October 11, 2007 Share #13 Posted October 11, 2007 getting out of the car to photograph seals in kaikoura, nz, i placed the camera on the top of my volvo to put on a sweater. my gal got out and the m8 slid off the roof and splat on the asphalt. nice brassing-no damgage to m8 or nocti functionally. no time to dive under it or i would have-i could only watch it happen in slo-motion...b
