mikeadams Posted October 9, 2007 Share #1 Posted October 9, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Uh Oh. In Shanghai teaching photography at the Shanghai Theatre Academy School of Television Arts. I'm charging my other M8 battery and for some reason the lights go out. I try other outlets. Maybe an internal fuse? Can I buy a charger in Shanghai? Where do I go? Address and or phone number? Otherwise I am stuck with only the Nikon D-200, and after all, all my students have that and the Canons. I really appreciate the help. fotografr Posted October 9, 2007 Share #2 Posted October 9, 2007 Try GuanLong on Nanjing Dong Lu about two blocks west of the Peace Hotel. Also, NR Camera on Wai Hai Zhong Road, North side, next to Lawson's 2 blocks west of the American consulate near Urumuqi road. There is also another place on Nanjing middle(Zhong)Road about 2 blocks west of the Ritz Carlton Portman Hotel/Hardrock Cafe/American Centre, on the SW corner who handle Leica. Good luck. Guest maddin Posted October 9, 2007 Share #3 Posted October 9, 2007 Hi Mike, too bad! Try the photo gear store corner Luban Lu / Xiete Lu just two blocks further from Xu Jia Hui exit of Nan Bei elevated highway direction Lupu and Nanpu brigde. 3rd or 4th floor. There are a few electronic shops in that mall as well possibly able to repair that thing. Bring it along. best regards

mikeadams Posted October 9, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted October 9, 2007 Yes, Incredible! I will show these messages to my translator/professor friend who is from here and have her make some calls. The M8 is my best camera, and I am always feeling guilty because I never use the Nikon!! Thanks again, Mike http://www.mikeadams.org
Guest maddin Posted October 9, 2007 Share #6 Posted October 9, 2007 Yes, Incredible! I will show these messages to my translator/professor friend who is from here and have her make some calls.... Hi Mike, please be prepared going to these places yourself. they are not too far apart anyway (by Shanghai standards at least), say about max 20 RMB. cheers
Guest maddin Posted October 10, 2007 Share #7 Posted October 10, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi Mike, too bad! Try the photo gear store corner Luban Lu / Xiete Lu just two blocks... please ask your chinese colleague to call 138 164 50717 being an electronic engineer in that complex who just fixed a digilux with high power consumption problems. He is not an official leica repair shpo.
hofrench Posted October 10, 2007 Share #8 Posted October 10, 2007 I live in Shanghai and often go to the (excellent) camera gear mall at luban lu - xietu lu, as mentioned above. I somehow doubt they have the charger, though. You may need to order one from Hong Kong, if not. It can be sent overnight. I'd be pleased to have you look at my Shanghai photography (links below). Am having a show starting Dec. 1, at the M97 gallery.
Bill Sievers Posted October 10, 2007 Share #9 Posted October 10, 2007 If you have trouble, I know a dealer in HK that might be willing to send one.

Actually, the street name is Xietu Lu ... and Leica's official distributor in China is also Schmidt so if you call their local office they'll dispatch a charger to you from Hong Kong anyways. mikeadams Posted October 13, 2007 Author Share #11 Posted October 13, 2007 Just to follow up: I did visit the places you all listed, but in order to get a power supply it would have to be ordered, or I would have to buy the entire camera. (how to explain that to my wife?) I also showed the power supply to a number of technicians working in the stores and they all said they were not qualified to work on it. Those stores that did have the M8 only had the power adapter supplied. When I return to Monterey and Camera West to pick up my repaired Digilux 2, I'll turn in the power thing. The funny thing is, I have been shooting for 3 or 4 days with my one and a half charged batteries, and got about 200 DNG images, but I am not reviewing or downloading. So my D-200 is getting its first use in months! I hope it is happy to by the "star" of this trip. Mike http://www.mikeadams.org
sean_reid Posted October 13, 2007 Share #12 Posted October 13, 2007 Maybe you can buy 4-5 batteries and ask them to precharge them for you. That would give you some shooting time. Cheers,
Shootist Posted October 13, 2007 Share #13 Posted October 13, 2007 Do yourself and the camera a big favor. BUY a SD card reader and use that to get the image off the card and on your PC/Mac. IE, STOP connecting the camera to your computer to get the images.
mikeadams Posted October 14, 2007 Author Share #14 Posted October 14, 2007 I do have a card reader and it is very handy. Teaching this class with 25 students, some SD, most CF, has been an eye opener. We are into "post," CS3 and Lightroom, so I will likely not have enough time to take many more photos. I already have thousands of just mine, my students thousands more. Thanks for a great and very civil forum, Mike http://www.trft.org/chinaphotoclass/

Thanks, Note to self: Order back-up power supply from distributor. I have a back-up power supply for my MacBook Pro based on experience, so I’ll be certain to do the same when I receive my new M8. Good luck with the rest of your trip. Regards,
mikeadams Posted October 15, 2007 Author Share #16 Posted October 15, 2007 I sure will get one now. Since I teach with the MacBookPro, I too brought two power supplies for it, and I have my slides in PDF form on a Windows CD, just in case. By the way, I have enjoyed the Panasonic TZ1 I brought for my third camera. The 10x zoom comes in handy, and it is always good to have a movie mode!!
