regarding poor AW balance, I used to have expo disc, but found it slow and not that accurate, I bought the neutral one (and not the warm one, which might be a better bet) and the pictures came out all too cold.

QPcard 101 and QPcard 102

then I got the above one. the AW is set at auto, you take a shot at the card, you can later using capture one to transfer reading onto all your pictures in one go, plus I found by taking a shot at the card, the AW becomes more reliable and accurate for all subsequent pictures. it is worth a try.

re the firmware, I'd be delighted if it came through with a "quiet" mode - still the critical factor for me.

re AWB - I'd strongly recommend shooting in RAW and processing in Lightroom. Works really well for me under all light conditions (cloud or sun, tungsten or neon ...) Some examples below.

Frankly, IMHO if you're not shooting RAW there's almost no point in having an M8.

Hope this helps...

Funny thing is, I use my M8 from day to day, work wise, and it just dosen't bug me! Sure the AWB (whatever that is!!) is off, it has venetian blinds (how else can you keep the extraneous light out?), and maybe other things. But it works and that is what I demand.

Shoot RAW (if you are serious about image control), don't chimp so much and you won't notice the venetian blinds, and what was that other problem?

Hell, I enjoy an upgrade of firmware as much as the next guy/gal, but I seriously am not hanging out for it. once loaded and ogled, it's back to work as usual. Yeah. It's what I do that makes the difference to my pics. If they are stuffed, the buck stops squarely with me, simply because I know my gear and what it can and can't do. Exceed that limit and I am to blame.

Now to make some pictures with th world's best gear.;)

Again, agreed. I work M8 and 1 Series Canon and now I've got workflow in LR sorted out I can't see a useful difference between images from one or the other in terms of colour rendition - though at low ISO I do find that the M8 hold up for enlargement better than the 5D or the 1D2, and I'm more than OK with the noise at 1250...

Yes, I still want better performance from a firmware upgrade (especially the quiet mode) - and I can understand how it makes some of us feel a bit insecure when the camera doesn't behave completely as predicted, but I agree with Erl that it's a working system...

A few firmware fixes would be welcome, but the M8 already delivers the goods in a relatively tiny package. The alternatives are a giant DSLR brick or a small P&S with disappointing image quality. Every camera has it's downside -- the M8's quirks are very easy to live with.

I agree with Chris that having an M8 and not shooting RAW seems like a waste. IAs for AWB, since I shoot in RAW its never been an issue -- and when I use JPGs for snapshots to send around, it is rarely an issue. The one thing I think is necesary is setting WB manually when you're shooting in tungsten light. AWB doesn't work very well there on any camera I have ever used, including especially Canon, when AWB is actually otherwise quite good. Flash also sometimes requires some tinkering. But I don't think a firmware change could address all the many variations in these lighting situations anyhow.

Yes, but some of us like to shoot RAW plus jpeg (for quick send to client) and if the AWB was more accurate it would entail a lot less time in post when shooting RAW and then processing thousands of images.

First, Chris what a great set of examples to show different wb problems. Nice shots!

Second, I also shoot both RAW and hi-res JPG. With the current version of the firmware, my jpegs are right 95% of the time. Since there is more to come, I would not call this result 'useless,' but rather would term it pretty good.

Thus, if I want to send out a jpg that is one of the poorly balanced ones, I can create one that is correctly balanced with little work. Since most are ok, non c'e male (not so bad).
