audidudi Posted October 8, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted October 8, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) The first time was when it slid off the trunk (boot) lid of the car while I was changing into my hiking boots, landing rather solidly on the asphalt parking lot; the second time was when I was changing lenses and it fell out of my hands from chest height, smacking the rock on which I was standing... Â While it's rather worse for wear cosmetically (it now has several nicks and a few gouges in the body), it continued to work flawlessly all day long and after examining the photos I shot with it afterward, I see no evidence they've had any effect upon its image quality. Â Needless to say, I'm favorably impressed!
Advertisement Posted October 8, 2007 Posted October 8, 2007 Hi audidudi, Take a look here I dropped my L1 _twice_ yesterday and it lived!. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
adan Posted October 8, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted October 8, 2007 Whew! Better buy a lottery ticket while your luck is holding! Â I dropped my Digilux 2 twice. First time nothing. Second time it appeared to be working fine but once I looked at the pictures enlarged (5 days later - I was on vacation), I realized something horrible had happened inside the lens - the corners had become very fuzzy and infinity focus via the lens scale was way off (the AF was reasonably OK - element knocked out of position I presume). Â I.E. the Panaleica bodies are tough and the "digital" part of the camera can take a lot, but the glass can suffer subtley, so you might want to check for any optical problems. I hope they check out fine, too!

audidudi Posted October 8, 2007 Author Share #4 Â Posted October 8, 2007 Wow, I guess your camera is a lot less impressed with you than you with it You're probably correct, but it hasn't formally protested yet... Â Although I do take good care of my equipment, it's meant to be used and accidents do happen occasionally, so I don't worry too much about a nick or gouge here or there. My cars, however, are another matter!

I hope they check out fine, too! Â In the first fall, the camera body landed on its back; in the second fall, there was no lens on the body. That said, I didn't see any problems when I looked at the images last night, but perhaps I should shoot a page or two of newspaper to double-check this ... thanks for the reminder! d_lague Posted October 9, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted October 9, 2007 I am not sure what you were doing when you dropped the camera, but......I am a fanatic about using a camera strap and keeping it around my neck. Â It makes me nuts to see someone one-handing an expensive camera with no neck strap in operation.
audidudi Posted October 9, 2007 Author Share #7  Posted October 9, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am not sure what you were doing when you dropped the camera, but......I am a fanatic about using a camera strap and keeping it around my neck. It makes me nuts to see someone one-handing an expensive camera with no neck strap in operation.  Personally, I hate neck straps -- or anything around my neck, for that matter! -- and I never, ever use one. When I'm shooting handheld, I do add a wrist strap to the camera as a preventive measure. In this case, though, I was going to be working from a tripod and in both cases, the camera fell while being handled. Other than being more careful with it, I'm not sure how I could have avoided it exposing it to the risk.  On a related note, I did take a closer look at the images I captured with it last night and can see no problems with focus or sharpness, so it appears there's no apparent internal damage to either the lens or the body. Alas, all of the images were otherwise ho-hum at best, although I do like this one in some ways...
carstenw Posted October 9, 2007 Share #8 Â Posted October 9, 2007 I use a strap on my M8, but don't carry it around my neck, but rather over my shoulder. When I shoot, it just hangs, but when I change lenses or something similarly fiddly, I do put it around my neck. I don't want to drop this thing. Â And if I owned an M8, which costs many times what my L1 does, I suspect I would be similarly careful. Not that an L1 is chump-change, of course, but by comparision, it's expendable... d_lague Posted October 10, 2007 Share #10 Â Posted October 10, 2007 I did not mean to be rude. I just try to wear that hated strap as much as I can. Â and I have dropped a few as well. How do you like the L1?

audidudi Posted October 11, 2007 Author Share #14 Â Posted October 11, 2007 Yeah right. And he probably likes Audis as well. Â I do, I do ... AWD and turbochargers are a great combination if you like to tinker with cars and live in a county subject to the EPA's stringent IM240 emissions testing. audidudi Posted October 11, 2007 Author Share #15 Â Posted October 11, 2007 I did not mean to be rude. I just try to wear that hated strap as much as I can. Â No problem ... I didn't think you were being rude. You just have a different opinion than I do, that's all. We're good. Â How do you like the L1? Â I'm generally pleased with it, although I think I'm ready to take the next step and move up to something like a Mamiya ZD back on a 645AFD body as I can't seem to achieve the sort of detail I've grown accustomed to seeing in my larger prints. Â I don't need autofocus, but I have grown to like the 4:3 format and with the possible exception of the upcoming E-3, it appears there is nothing else available that will provide me with larger, more detailed files in a 4:3 format without cropping. Hmmm...
