rather than add to the other informative post. Can someone tell me how my elmarit (2.8), 28 lens rates? It was made in canada during the mid 60's w/serial 20,62368. It has the a protruding lend barrel. I bought it seven years ago for about six hundred bucks.

a few questions - do i need to code it ? where would I find a lens hood for it - not sure which one it needs?

thanks again folks

you have a 1st vers 28/2.8. If you are planning on using it on the M8 - it won't meter. Nor will it meter on any M camera with a built in meter.

I'm not sure theres much point in coding or using it on the M8. lens hood is: 12501

bummer. thanks

Not a real bummer, be carefull .... you are probably sitting on gold ... if you happen to own a minty 9 elements first series 28 Elmarit ....the mint in box versions run for over Euro 2000 on the collectors market here in Europe ....

Look here .... Schouten Select Cameras & Accessories!

This guy is expensive .. but he is very reliable and the stuff he sells is first grade .... he sure knows the prices on 2nd hand/ collectors market!

Whatever you do - do not modify this lens in any way. You indeed have the rare and much sought after 1st version. Serial number range for this lens was from 2 061 501 - 2 533 880 while the 2nd version (which does not look very different) started from 2 314 801.

This lens will reach $2000 or more on the used marked, so if you sell it you could get a new 2.8/28 ASPH which optically is much better but has no value as a collection piece (assuming you are only a user, not a collector).

By the way, the lens hood is 12501, which is the same one as for the 3.4/21 Super-Angulon.

There is one out on e-Bay now but the price is on the high side:

Leica Lens Shade 12501 for 3,4/21mm boxed - (eBay item 280159803373 end time Oct-14-07 08:01:43 PDT)

I also checked KevinCameras and he has several in stock.

With a little patience, you will find it on eBay for about $100 - 150, depending on condition.
