The Grand Canyon is and will always be a special landmark. In my young and silly day I walked from the rim to the river and back up in mid-July. I barely made it, took me 10 hours.

When I was a Boy Scout, the annual Memorial Day Weekend death march was the Rim-to-Rim hike, down the Bright Angel Trail one year and down the South Kaibab Trail the next. My knees seize up at the thought of it. We didn't carry much food, but a lot of water. It was like hiking in a reflector oven, especially switchbacking up to the North Rim.
