Hi all,

Having not seen fungus on a lens before, please can you advise if this fungus on a 1968 Summicron 50/2? Looks like a tree branch, or the outline of a dried up water mark or stain

Thanks

Yes.  Fungus can take many shapes, including filaments like in your image.

Thank you.

Follow-up questions: is this generally a cause for concern, if not visible in photos? Best way to test this? Will it get worse? Shall I get my money back?

Oh, if it's a lens you've just bought then yes get your money back (assuming it wasn't dirt cheap and or you were told about the 'issue').

It won't affect the photos but many people wouldn't touch a lens with fungus, even if dead and not going to get any worse.

It might be something else but either way if you wanted it cleaned you're looking at additional cost (and if it is fungus and it's etched the glass it will always show).

It kinda depends but I'd say, yes. If you can return it and get a full refund, do so.

That little bit of fungus, if it is fungus, is not likely to have any significant effect on your photos but, you'll always be concerned about it. It will weigh on  your mind. Even if it can be cleaned, cleaning costs money and fungus often leaves permanent scars in the glass. Just send it back and keep looking. It might be better to looks for something newer or from a reputable dealer. Often something that seems like a"good deal" really is not.

It's an eBay purchase of £720, otherwise there's a bit of dust here and there which is acceptable to me, and the focus throw is very stiff, but I can work on that. It's a nice small lens but shame about the fungus - I was hoping to keep it for the life of my M, so it's got to be a good copy. Thanks all

Is that the dual range one? You can also look into a version 3 summicron. Soft and vintage.

Great lens and well-priced - I hope you find a nice replacement copy

Yeah it was, it was otherwise perfect but i would be afraid it would be hard to shift on if it decided to sell it later. It’s smaller than my CV 35 1.4 II, at least the same size which was perfect.
