sparkie Posted October 1, 2007 Author Share #21 Posted October 1, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) If you decide to buy the WATE I have an extra Milich adapter with filter I would like to sell. I recently moved and could not find it so bought another from John. Of course immediately thereafter I found the original. I will sell it for the original price of the adapter from John plus the price of the filter. Woody Spedden I will be in touch if I decide to squeeze the already skinny pig for this lens! cheers

tom0511 Posted October 2, 2007 Share #23 Posted October 2, 2007 hi tom, how does the WATE at 21f4.0 comare to your 21/2.1 at f4are you saying there is no cyan corners even with the IR filter on? I have the GRD also, I think the finder is a fixed 28mm no Hi Sparkie, I have not done any direct comparison - I just can tell you my impression (not proved): Maybe the WATE is a little more cantrasty than the 21asph, and the 21asph maybe a little smoother tones. Overall I havent used the 21asph since I received the WATE about 4 weeks ago. I find myself using the wate mostly either at 16mm or at 21mm. The external Ricoh finder has frames for 21mm and 28mm included, it is brighter than the Frankefinder and shows less distorsion. Maybe framing is not as accurate-but so far accurate enough for me. No, no cyan corners (so far). I use the Millich adapter with a Leica 49mm filter. Regards, Tom Some wate images:

freecitizen Posted October 2, 2007 Share #25 Posted October 2, 2007 This is a very timely thread for me as I have been wondering what to do about proper wide angle glass for my M8. I have the 21/2.8 ASPH and the 28/2 ASPH. Thinking of the WATE which would be mostly used on the M8 alone, but occasionally on M8/M6 two-body combo - this gives me effectively 16 to 28 in the one lens spread over two bodies. Planning on getting the Milich filter holder, but seems like I might have to wait a long while to get the Leica 49mm filter to put in it. But the main problem is the workflow .... need to remove the UV/IR filter when changing to the M6, and replace it when going back to the M8 .... every time. Then there is the viewfinder. I don't mind the bulk or appearance of the viewfinder at all - its just there to help me get good pictures and it works. But it seems quite an ordeal in actual use. First set the focal length depending on which camera the lens is on. If its the M8 then set focal length in the menu and also whether using the filter or not. Remember to change focal length in the menu every time I move the focal length ring on the lens. Then parallax correction on the viewfinder. Starting to remind me of my old 6X9 Linhof with all this messing about. Probably just OK if shooting landscapes and taking it slow, but not exactly what I've come to think of Leica being all about. Then there is the price. And despite following the threads on this forum I still haven't got a real handle on how far behind in image quality the CV 15 is compared with the WATE. Hope to try a CV15 for myself in the next week or so to nail down this difference. One thing I did notice when trying the WATE/M8 is a graduated blue across the sky when shooting at about 90 degrees from the sun - just like the effect you get with a polarising filter, but with no filter on the lens. Don't know if this is veiling flare, or what. Much bluer sky in the corner of the frame furthest from the sun. Has anyone else seen this phenomenon ? I am trying to talk myself into the WATE but its not happening ( yet ). Is there anyone using an M8 and M6 together with the WATE who would like to comment please on how it works for them ? tom0511 Posted October 2, 2007 Share #26 Posted October 2, 2007 I am trying to talk myself into the WATE but its not happening ( yet ). Is there anyone using an M8 and M6 together with the WATE who would like to comment please on how it works for them ? 1) I think changing the menue setting from 15 to 21mm in the menue and changing the viewfinder is still faster/easier than changing a lens. 2) as I said before if you use a Ricoh GRD finder you do not have to change anything in the finder- you have 21 and 28mm setting. Of course this only works for the M8 and not on film. In film times I was happy with the 21/2.8, I see the biggest advantage in the WATE for using it with the M8 - you get coding, you gert a decent wide angle of view. I dont like handcoding and twhile the cv15 was sharp and contrasty it got me a lot of vignetting on the M8, and its kind of slow. 3) Price - its expensive and I dont know if I would have bought it without the 30%deal, but: look what you pay for a Leica R15mm, or for a Zeiss 15mm (even its 2.8 but not rangefinder coupled). My most usefull lenses: WATE, MATE, 28/2.0 cheers, Tom

Perspectics Posted October 3, 2007 Share #28 Posted October 3, 2007 ...Regards, Tom Some wate images: ... Tom, I know this thread is about the WATE but I and a friend were fascinated by your pictures a lot. The second one has a mind blowing perspective and is my favorite. Regarding the first we were discussing if it was HDR (High Dynamic Range Image) - Wikipedia I'm thinking "no", my friend thinks differently. Can you clarify? Thanks, Claus Claus, thank you for the comment. No special technique. Just one imgae converted in C1 and eventually (I dont remember) increased the midetones a bit by moving the curve in c1 a little. Nothing special. I usually rather underexpose a bit to keep the brighter areas. Grüße, Tom
