intex Posted September 29, 2007 Share #1 Posted September 29, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am in Europe, decided to save space by not taking the M8, and bot a new DLux 3. It worked the one day i tried it at home. Now when I turn it on, there is NO Image in the LCD viewfinder. The LCD works, as it does show all data on the screen, and the Menu works, but does not display ANY image of what you are looking at or what has been taken, other than the 20 pixs I took before I left. The shutter releases, but in playback, I see nothing. I have read the whole manual, but no use, Am I just forgetting something? Other than that, here in Europe, we have places called camera shops where you will be able to obtain, in exchange for m-o-n-e-y, a new camera. I would try to get to a dealer to check things out and also take the suggestions above regarding making sure the SD card is not locked and trying another card. The camera may be fine. I can not understand why they wouldn't put a recall in, or have it checked beforehand!!! I am not a happy camper with Leica at the moment. My wife got tired of lugging the M8 in her purse, so for this extended month long trip, she said carry it or else, so I decided to get something lighter. BAD mistake! My canon has been thru much worse, and never failed me. What a jerk I was, now to buy a new camera here at twice the price of the US is going to bother me forever. Thanks for the suggestions though. I don't know how long you will stay in Europe. I recommend you to call Leica at Solms, explain them your problem and I think they can do something for you. For this kind of problems, Leica is very pro-active. Eg. My first M8 died on Sunday 24H after I bought it. My dealer is closed on Mondays. On Friday, I will travel to Russia. Leica was ready to send me a new body to my home address same day (Monday) and I could return my dead body to the dealer on Tuesday to be send to Solms. Finally, I decided to wait till Tuesday and my dealer replaced the camera. Ahhh... don't worry if you don't have the warranty card (or bill with you). As it's a new model this shouldn't be a problem. marknorton Posted September 30, 2007 Share #11 Posted September 30, 2007 You don't say where you are but in the UK could could get a Digilux 3 and reclaim the VAT on your way out; the camera's about $600 and $750 here, so hardly double and that is down to Leica UK's greedy pricing. Keep in mind it's a Panasonic in all but name and maybe a bit of firmware tweaking, so you might find buying the equivalent Panasonic an alternative. Mind you, if the cost of a camera is going to bother you forever, the cost of living in Europe for a month is hardly going to have you jumping for joy. It's a ludicrous excuse not to bring your M8 on a month long trip to Europe. "I didn't bring my proper camera because my wife refuses to carry it for me". michael_b_elmer Posted September 30, 2007 Share #17 Posted September 30, 2007 I would be surprised if your camera were really faulty, since you can see the menu and the pictures you took before going to Europe. I do not have the camera myself, but I have a DLux 2. The settings can be changed when putting, respectively taking the camera into, respectively out of the photo bag. Did your manual controls move just a little bit for that reason - eg. so that you use the macro setting? Like Mark, my first idea was that you had shot the pictures with the lens cap on. Another possibility might be a problem with the setup menu. Try to reset the camera through the setup menu. You might also have a problem with the battery or the SD-card. Try to change the battery - or is the explanation simply that you do not use the correct plug for the transformer loading the battery, so that it is not charged? Check that the SD-card is not locked, or eventually, try another SD-card. If the camera is faulty it should be very easy to get it changed in Europe. Orthers on these forums have had the same problem, and had to return them to Leica. This is the fourth, time I have had to purchase new camera gear while in Europe. The first was stolen in baggage, the other times from purses, assualts, and from hotel room, so I just dont want to carry any expensive gear, as I am not a professional going on a shoot. I walk about 6-8 miles a day, and do not want to lug a somewhat heavy camera and lens around for that long. Give me a break! I take the Leica when I travel by car, so I can stash it their. I changed from Canon to the DLux3 for ease of use, I stow in in my pocket. Let me know if there is no one out there, that lets their wife carry something foir them in their purse! Anyway I am not one of those to wear the camera on my neck. I will email Leica and see what they can do. I am in France, and not always near a camera store that carries Leica. I can hardly find a dealer in my hometown in the US. Anyway I'll buy a canon if I can find one. Im just so p****d off since I just boit this just for this trip, and it did not take picture ONE here. Give me some slack.... I was just trying to find someone to help me fix this, didn't need the bashing. Anyway each of us use the camera, and the others aren't that familiar with the Leica. The camera must weigh, what, about 2 pounds, about the same as you will ingest when you stop by The Golden Arches for sustinence, because you can't stand the food here. Like snails and frogs legs and octopus. Reminds me of a conversation I had a few months back with an American whose principal conclusion about Europe was that McDonalds was not as good as back home.
