While window shopping in our local store, I stumble upon a Noctilux, new, and I hold my breath, this is the lens that people talk about. Beauty! ANd I check the price is equivalent of $4000. Why the new one lower than the used ones available in Ebay (above $4400 mark). Is it the market price?

Thanks

DJ

Buy it. The dealer that has it is unaware of the price increase. It now goes for over $5000, I think $5495 at B&H.

The latest version has a built in sliding hood. The older versions have clip on or bayonet on hoods with either 58mm (first version with bayonet on hood) or 60mm filters (last two versions with removable hood, plus current version). All versions are identical mechanically and optically except for the hoods and filter size.

The colour of the box will date it too. Red boxes are from the 1980's, white from the 1990's and into the 2000's, silver with black label is the latest box style.

Just divide by our exchange rate of 9200 you get the US dollar price.

it is optimised at @1, focus shift at @2.8 is already quite noticeable, when will leica release a mark II version, with asph/floating elements?

Actually that looks like the old price and is/was higher then what you COULD OF bought it for in the USA 8-9+ months ago. That is if you could of found one.

As a matter of interest I just purchased a super mint Canon 50 mm 1.2 on EBAY thanks Ken!

I had read a lot about the lens and was prepared to be disappointed by softness, flare etc.- I figured that in the condition it was in I could always sell it on to a collector if it was unsatisfactory.

To make a long story short the lens is exceptional I will post some examples later, but it is very sharp even wide open and has of course amazing bokeh, perhaps I just received a very good example?

I actually have my pretty mint one listed on eBay now. (Mine even has a specially-machined M to LTM adapter to allow perfect focus on my calibrated M8.) And I agree it is a super cool lens! I found mine as sharp as my 50 Summilux, but with a lot lower/softer contrast --- probably a really desireable trait for B&W film. The nice thing was I could boost the contrast in PS to get it up to almost the look of the 50 Lux. And yes, Bokeh was off the charts buttery smooth. It also has more "glow" than the Lux. I'm only selling mine because I finally caved --- actually because of this post! --- and am getting a Leica Noctilux and need to figure out how to pay for it :o

Cheers,
