As a result of several house moves just before Covid, my collection of Leica gear was split up and I have only now managed to get everything back to one location. In this collection, I have found an Abrahamsson Rapidwinder that I cannot ID - nor can Tuulikki Abrahamsson or Stephen Gandy. I attach photographs of a "regular" M4 Rapidwinder and the "mystery" one. The regular Rapidwinder has the fitting on the base to capture the M4-style film "tulip" fingers. The Mystery Rapidwinder has only a short brass "nub". It is not an M2 model (which I also have) as that lacks the drive coupling and instead uses a connection to the M2's takeup spool.

I have had some oddities in my collection over the years, including an M3 converted to motor drive, but that camera used the "regular" M4-style Rapidwinder. It is possible Tom made this for me BITD, possibly for a camera since sold - but I can't recall. Any ideas? It is definitely for an M Leica. Thanks

Hello Steve,

Welcome to the Forum.

Did you ever have an M2-M ? They were made around 1966.

By the way, What does "BITD" mean? Sometimes, acronyms, which are very popular on this Forum, are not as universally understood as a person using them might think.

Best Regards,

Michael

Thanks - Welcome back, I guess - joined this forum in 2006, but have been a lurker

Apologies for the acronyms - BITD = Back in the day... Ancient history - before digital 🙂

I do not believe I ever had an M2-M. I was always more an M3 user TBH (To be honest)

According to the original post, Stephen Gandy can't ID it either.

Nor could Tuulikki. It's an odd one for sure. I have had many M Leicas over the years. My best guess is this was an early prototype. I corresponded directly with Tom back when he started making these, but no longer have access to the emails
